Veterans can now refill their prescriptions (Rx) using the VA Health and Benefits mobile app. Existing users will need to download the latest version of the app to gain access to new features. If you don’t see the Prescriptions feature in the “Health Care” tab after you download the latest version, completely quit the app and open it again.

The Health and Benefits mobile app is VA’s official, all-in-one, on-the-go, easy-to-use, accessible, on-demand app that enables Veterans to manage both their VA health care and benefits services at their fingertips.

Adding Rx refill makes the VA Health and Benefits mobile app more useful and multi-functional for the over 1 million Veterans who have downloaded the mobile app.

VA designed and developed the app with Veterans’ feedback, so it’s an easy, streamlined and secure digital platform that allows you to complete everyday VA tasks from an IOS or Android smartphone. It offers a more personalized experience, allowing you to quickly and easily connect with VA to manage your health care and benefits needs.

Highlights of the new Rx refill feature

Here's what the app screen looks like.

VA Health and Benefits mobile app

The new Rx refill feature allows Veterans to:

  • View your VA active and non-active Rx history (up to 180 days);
    • Filter and sort Rxs
    • View Rx details
  • Request refills of your refillable VA-dispensed Rxs;
  • View pending (recently submitted or refill in-process) refills; and
  • View tracking information, through delivery, for trackable refills.

The app provides a native mobile interface, like the “Rx refill” feature of My HealtheVet. You can easily track refill requests submitted through the app or the My HealtheVet website and dispensed by a VA Consolidated Mail Outpatient Pharmacy using the app’s “Track Delivery” feature.

This new feature means you can easily (with your phone’s biometric face recognition or thumb login capability) and securely log into the VA Health and Benefits mobile app to quickly and safely manage your VA prescriptions from anywhere. If you don’t have a compatible mobile device, don’t worry! You can still access web-based Rx refills at VA.gov or My HealtheVet.

Note: VA is undergoing an Electronic Health Record Modernization (EHRM) effort, which may impact whether the My HealtheVet and Rx refill feature on the VA Health and Benefits mobile app are operational in your area. To learn more, visit the EHRM website.

Consolidated, fast, and intuitive access

The VA Health and Benefits mobile app offers a single-entry point for Veterans to access their most common VA health care and benefits transactions. You no longer need to figure out which website to visit or remember which password to use. VA’s Health and Benefits mobile app acts as the digital front door for Veterans, families and caregivers, streamlining access to information and services and eliminating the frustration associated with siloed technologies of the past.

“VA hit the nail on the head with this app. I can’t stress enough how useful it is. It used to be that I had to go to the computer and navigate different areas of the VA site, which at the time were unintuitive. It’s so much easier now,” shared a VA Health and Benefits mobile app user.

Haven’t downloaded the app yet? Here’s how

Accessing the VA Health and Benefits mobile app is free, fast and easy! Simply search “VA” and download the VA: Health and Benefits app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store located on your mobile device.

To learn more about the mobile app and its other features—such as managing appointments; secure messaging; viewing claims and appeals, and submitting related evidence; downloading VA letters; and locating VA facility locations—check out the VA Health and Benefits mobile app website.

VA will continue to roll out more new features to the app in the future.

Might be easier filling prescriptions at home, but try doing it while traveling. Just did at Va in Nashville and it took over 2 hrs. Said I had to be seen by emergency Dr 1st to get a refill of my medication already prescribed. Total bull larky in my book. Michael

Thanks VA. I was using MyhealtheVa and when it was changed to “premium” I couldn’t use it any more. It is hard for me to use a mobile so with my computer I did better.

    Hi,

I am able to locate the “Refill Prescription” option: Home > Health care > Prescription > Start Refill Request.

  4. Carol Peters April 2, 2023 at 09:35

I downloaded the app and the prescriptions is not on the Health page!

Tonight I dodownloaded this VA app to avoid the constant problems I have trying to refill prescriptions over the phone with my local VA. Once I get the app installed I find out I have to upgrade to a Premium plan. Well for the last 100 minutes I’ve been trying to log in to switch to a Premium plan but have been unable. What a bullshit app. It doesn’t work.

I just downloaded the APP [google play] and do not see any option to manage prescriptions?

    • Barry March 31, 2023 at 08:27

Actually, I just signed out and signed in again, and now I see my prescriptions!

  7. Raymond B Pollok March 31, 2023 at 02:59

DOWNLOADED MULTIPLE TIMES AND TRIED EVERYTHING BUT DOES NOT HAVE PRESCRIPTION OPTION AS OTHERS HAVE SAID. WASTED LOTS OF TIME! DID FINALLY FIND A SEPARETE APP ON THE APPLE APP STORE CALLED VA RX REFILL AND THAT WORKS OK. WHY DID THEY SEND THE EMAIL WITH WRONG INFORMATION?

ONLY THE GOVERNMENT DOES THIS TYPE OF MISINFORMATION AND GETS AWAY WITH IT. I THOUGHT THEY WERE GOING TO START FIRING INCOMPITANT AND UNCARING EMPLOYEES?

LIKE LEAVING A VOICMAIL FOR THE VA AND EXPECTING A CALL BACK!

Same as above, “Va Health and Benefits” app can be downloaded but does not give access to RX Refill. I have the old version of the latter app and it still works okay but the new one seems to promise more but–where is it?

  12. walter March 30, 2023 at 18:08

the va and the internet r not very compatible. the va can’t seem 2 figure out how to efficiently/effectively use it. the military/gov’t beaurocracy has never been able 2 get out of its own way. makes it tough on vets.

  13. walter March 30, 2023 at 17:59

if i can get $0 prescriptions thru my medicare benefits, why does the va charge me $8 per prescription??????????????????????????????

  14. Robert Campbell March 30, 2023 at 12:44

Dealing with the VA on-line is almost impossible. I get asked things like where my parents were married. I’ll ask them —-Oh wait, they both died over 50 years ago and they never told me! Until I need something more than my name and last 4, I’ll just call ask get whatever services I need.

  15. Edward Mounts March 30, 2023 at 12:27

The refill option is not available in the APP, just downloaded the app and you can only check appointments, view messages VA Vaccine records or check COVID updates.

  17. Jonathan Phillips March 30, 2023 at 09:32

When will the roll out in the Google Play Store. I have been using the app for quite a while now and received no update. I checked the Google Play store and showed no update needed. I also uninstalled the app and reinstalled the app and still do not have the prescription refill option the app.

  18. Fred J Goebel March 30, 2023 at 09:18

March 30, 2023: I installed the app, logged in, and looked for the prescription refill option. It wasn’t there. So I followed the instructions, logging out of the app and closing it. I then logged in again and looked for the prescription refill option that was now supposed to be there. It’s still not there. I had to download a completely different app to access my prescription information and options. So this app does not do what it claims to do.

For a 80 year old vet it’s impossible get this app.

    • Chris Johnston April 5, 2023 at 11:16

Hello Warren. Installing the app on an iOS or Android device should be similar to any other app. If you search the app store on your device for “VA,” the VA Health and Benefits app should be the first or second option.

Alternatively, note that all the features of the app are also available using your computer on either VA.gov or My HealtheVet (https://www.myhealth.va.gov/)

  20. Andrew Flockhart March 30, 2023 at 08:55

For those former Service Members who are retired from the military and who also have a VA disability rating, how about making a SitRep video about whether it’s better to use TriCare (or TriCare for Life in conjunction with Medicare) or the VA for our healthcare? Does one offer a better option for care over the other?

  25. John Griffin March 30, 2023 at 06:16

Is there a means test for receiving prescriptions? IOW if my income is over a certain amount, I’m not eligible?

  27. Eric Maule March 30, 2023 at 00:24

Sorry… how is this “consolidated, fast, and intuitive access”? To log onto the app, first my phone has me use biometric ID, then the VA app makes me choose a method to log in with. I choose DS Login, which then goes to a banner screen that I have to acknowledge, then I provide my password, then I have to get a code by text message, then it wants me set up two-factor ID (really? more like 4th factor… I’ve already used my fingerprint, password, and passcode… why the heck would I want to add yet another layer?). But that’s not it! Once I’m redirected back to VA site I have to get another passcode to my phone! Really? what gives? I mean I’m as security concious as the next guy, but if every bank account, credit card, credit report, civilian pharmacy, etc. can be safely accessed with just a biometric ID, why do I have to spend literally 5 minutes logging in 4 different times just so I can see my medicine list or upcoming appointments??

  28. Lowell Fast March 29, 2023 at 22:28

    BULLSHT!!!!!!!!!!!
Just try to fill a prescription

  29. Curtis Musselman March 29, 2023 at 21:16

My wife and I receive Rx from Express Scripts for $12 each.
What is cost thru VA and would we have to pick up at the VA Hospital in Salem, Va. ?

  30. Timothy List March 29, 2023 at 20:32

I went to the Google app store to update my app, still no Rx info. I finally decided to risk losing what access I currently have, and uninstalled the app and redownloaded it. Now you won’t let me back in unless I sent you my complete life’s history. This is BS. How about you just give me a device at my next appointment that has it and setup by your staff.

  31. Justin Quattlebaum March 29, 2023 at 19:41

The app doesn’t have a section for prescriptions.

This would be GREAT…..if the VA actually carried the prescription drugs that I take! How in the world do you NOT offer generic Nexium?? That medicine has been around for about 25 years now, and I cannot fathom why you can’t offer it?
