Are you a Veteran with an injury or disability who has an idea for a device that could improve your mobility, independence or ability to enjoy the activities you love? The Quality of Life Plus Program (QL Plus) is here to help—at no cost to you.

QL Plus creates one-of-a-kind personalized solutions. Each year, QL Plus works with Veterans to design and build custom devices that enhance their daily lives or enable them to participate in sports, hobbies and other activities.

Past projects include:

  • Hiking prosthetics.
  • Kayak and bike lifts.
  • Wheelchair tire cleaners.
  • Specialized archery equipment.
  • A rollerblading attachment for a prosthetic leg.
  • And many more. If you have an idea—big or small—QL Plus wants to hear it.

No cost, no red tape

Any Veteran with a disability (service-related or not) is eligible to apply. There is absolutely no cost to the Veteran—QL Plus covers all expenses, including travel if in-person fittings or measurements are needed.

How it works

QL Plus teams up with engineering students at 25 universities across the country. These students take on these individual projects as part of their senior Capstone course, dedicating an entire academic year to designing and building the custom device.

Here’s what Veterans who participate can expect:

  • Fall semester: The Veteran collaborates with a student team to design the device.
  • Spring semester: The students build and refine it to meet the Veteran’s needs.
  • Project timeline: Most projects kick off in the fall and wrap up in May.

If a Veteran’s project is selected, they will work closely with the students through virtual check-ins and (if needed) in-person meetings. The students—guided by faculty and expert mentors—are passionate, hardworking and committed to bringing each Veteran’s idea to life.

If there’s something that would make a difference in your life, QL Plus wants to help build it.

You can also check out past featured projects, visit the QL Plus YouTube channel to see solutions in action or follow them on Facebook and Instagram.

More VA BS! Just try and get anything. Everything worth having goes to the biden/harris 100M illegals. I’ve been trying to get a powered wheelchair since 2020.

100% Disabled VN veteran, VA sent letter of assistance grant $17,400. VA raised our hopes then wanted paper work. Every form sent to VA was backed up with another requirement form. After nine months I gave up ever seeing roll-in showers. I’m sure we would have seen completion if I was a paraplegic.

I Lost my Hearing while Serving my Country. 20 Years ago I received Hearing Aids that Worked really Well…. Today hearing AIDS are No Longer made in the USA. The Noise Amplifier JUNK that the VA gives Veterans insures that “WE” become Reclusive and not Able to communicate with Family and Friends. Believe me it would BE THE SAME to give a STICK to a Veteran that Lost His Leg..!
****I also have to WAIT 4-Years before I can Receive NEW Hearing Aids that May or May NOT work BETTER…!!!!
****There is NO Accountability for the Veterans Administration to Give US this Junk to Us….. and say: “Thank You For Your Service”

Is there any transition device that can make it possible to move from living room to outside back porch and from hall to front porch? I have a ramp to the garage but to get to the porches in a wheelchair there is a small rise in the levels from the house to the porches. Enough of a rise that it is difficult for me to get outside. This smaller than a step but higher than a bump. I get stuck and have to stand on one leg and try to pull the wheelchair thru the door.
Also, is there a device for amputees that folds up small that can be used for going into a bathroom at night when you are traveling and in motels or in private homes? You can’t always get handicap bathroom (then a wheelchair won’t fit through a doorway). It would be nice if you could use it in the shower too. Built in shower seat are hard to use with one leg. You keep sliding off the seat.

Would love to explore a track vehicle.

I face an issue that many older people have that are disabled. I can only live in part of my house because it has a lower level that I cannot access. I can’t go up or down the stairs so half of my world is lost to me. The stairs are not strong enough or wide enough to allow for a chair lift.

Don’t get too optimistic, Trump and Musk are on the loose and just dying to take away any funding especially for vets and stop any progress that benefi t s them. He has targets everywhere and no heart or concern for those who risked their lives for our country which he was too cowardly to fo.

    • Earl Parkerson March 6, 2025 at 09:20 - Reply

I agree with you; I get so tired of the lies. They are not listening to what he is saying.

    • Irvine Eugene Sines March 6, 2025 at 13:43 - Reply

Never forget that even though any administration may have good or bad ideas it is the legislative branch of our government which controls the disbursement of and amount of funding and benefits. No need to complain, remember from basic training: (“I will call my congressman”). That still works if you are smart enough to follow a recipe!!!

My husband is able to walk, but not very steady. Is it possible that the students could make & install handrails going down an outside staircase? He loves going down to his shop, but not safe for him! Thank you!

What ever happened to the Guitars For Vets that was in Rockford Illinois before the pandemic started in 2020? I loved it and I looked forward to the meetings and it was suddenly stopped in 2020. It never was reinstated.
