Secure sign-in changes are here. VA is making these changes to meet modern security standards for protecting your personal data and help preventing scammers from stealing your benefits.
You can no longer use your My HealtheVet user ID and password to sign in to VA.gov, VA apps or any other online VA services. After Sept. 30, 2025, you also won’t be able to use your DS Logon username and password for VA online services.
Moving forward, you will have two sign-in options: a Login.gov account or ID.me account.
VA staff across the country are here to support you through the transition. When Army Veteran Rick Meyer needed to learn how to sign in to access his health records online, he visited the Lincoln VA Outpatient Clinic in Lincoln, Nebraska. Meyer, like many Veterans, wanted to make sure he got a head start on this important change. A VA staff member was ready to help.
Veterans helping Veterans
When Meyer arrived at the clinic in Lincoln, he was concerned he wouldn’t be able to access VA online services because of the secure sign-in changes. Meyer uses the My HealtheVet health portal to schedule appointments and refill prescriptions. He met with Connected Health Technician Michael Nickel, an Air Force Veteran who has been using My HealtheVet since 2012.
Meyer said that Nickel guided him step by step through the new sign-in process and made sure he could sign in on his own. Meyer was touched by Nickel’s professionalism. The technician was patient and kind to the older Veteran, and willing to stay after hours to assist.
“He made my day,” Meyer said. “He was so pleasant and so nice. The clinic is so helpful. The wait isn’t usually very long. You have an expert to get you taken care of. On a scale from 1 to 100, they get a 100.”
Meyer was not the only Veteran confused by the secure sign-in changes: “Mr. Meyer is our typical Veteran here in the Midwest,” he said. It’s crucial that Veterans have someone to answer their questions. He understands the everyday challenges they face. “They’re a family to me. More so than blood sometimes, because of the experiences you share.”

I think I have new account didn’t write it down tried to reset password but nothing worked. Help
The Va is still broken, here we go again with these new easy sign ins. Someone who keeps telling us the new one is easier to sign in is in la la land. The one before took me over a month the get signed in. Now here is another genius come up with a better idea. NOT. I have been trying for the last weeks to get sign in with the new boondoggle by several different people, but they all kept referring me to another person as they could not do it. Tick Tick Tock I know that by 6 June I will still be calling to get the NEW WAY signed up. So, here I set broken hearted tried to get things fixed and still broken hearted. Woe is you to keep coming up with these NEW WAYS is so difficult to do. Seems like you are deliberately trying to make us give up and that is less work for you and no benefits for those of the GREATEST GENERATION since WW2. Again, Woe unto you. Shame on you. Notice I did not threaten you so no need to call the police or squat team. Just getting to be an old fart and after 28 years + in the United States Army and in the Proud Special Forces (Green Berets) we deserve better.
“Old soldiers never die . . . they just get cancelled by ‘technology’ “. To get approved for this new sign-in procedure, you need a phone number “assigned” to YOUR name. How does a phone number get “assigned” to your name? No one knows. But there is a secret list of everyone’s name and the related phone number. Somewhere.
OK. If you use “social media” your phone number was indelibly attached to your name/account by Mark Zuckerberg or Bill Gates or Sergey Brin. That’s how “social media” is able to steal your personal info and sell it making $millions off of you. ID.ME somehow collaborates with Zuckerberg to get this phone number. If you don’t use “social media” you are screwed. I hate “technology”.
This is a wandurhfull memorial day
how long before the VA will change everything again ? Your always making things worse.
I would like to volunteer and help to Veterans obtain the app
What about those of us who have no use for a cellphone and don’t have one?
Id.me, for one, does not accept “alternative verification” if the agency won’t allow it. (i.e. VA, IRS, SSA, ?)
So we’re SOL.
The real kick in the head is that IRS _ONLY_ accepts Id.me Not Login.gov, which allows us to verify at a Post Office.
To all those vets who are having issues with the VA’s new sign-in system; All of you need to contact your congressman and/or US Senators to voice your complaints. Maybe, just maybe, they will do something about it.
This new sign in for the Pharmacy sucks. Who ever came up with this fracking nightmare needs a bullet right between their eyes. This is the biggest joke ever. Still can not sign in. Been trying ever sense it was changed. Even had a VA rep try to help me. But no use. Could not help because I don’t have a cell phone. I can not afford a cell phone and then I can not see what is on the screen of one. Don’t know how to text and never ever text. CAN NOT SEE THE SCREEN TO TEXT. Some older Vets are this way. Why don’t you stupid people think of us sometimes.
New requirements are occurring all too often. I am in a marginal area for cellular coverage and my wired phone requires an extension number for a call to come through. This blocks unwanted calls, and I don’t have the ability to bypass the function. The use of a cell phone may be convenient for the VA and the government but where were they when the Chinese were in the OPM and snatched all my information?
Due to the new sign-in changes, I am no longer able to access the VA. When I was continually rejected, I contacted the HealtheVet Coordinator and the Patient Advocate for assistance. In spite of all their efforts. they also ran into insurmountable roadblocks. I was finally able to talk to someone with the GSA which is now managing the system. Since I live in a dead zone, a smart-phone doesn’t work here. I have phone service and use of a computer, but I am using VoIP (Voice over Internal Protocol) which is not recognized by the GSA because they use an analog system. So…these advancements aren’t that great after all.
I have authenticated at .gov and id.me on my computer but cannot at va.gov due to it’s reliance on
cellphone procedure which doesn’t work on my phone. I have no way of getting to the local clinic
as I am almost 90 years old and cannot drive. The friend who was driving me to my yearly appointment has died
and there is no public transportation.
What this article fails to address is the matter of, both IDMe and Login even renew.gov require a state ID card or license to verify identity. I have no state ID and am a Disabled American Veteran. State Ids cost money and here in NC, the people cannot even renew their licenses without somehow getting an appointment or, by no more than happenstance, walking into a DMV office and being extremely lucky. I signed up for both IDme and Login.gov months ago, yet the requitrment to identify myself requires a state ID.
Login.gov even has my phone number which they use for 2 factor identification and I was hoping this would would provide a workaround for the state I, but mo dice. I can vote with , myhealthevetVA patient ID and must pay for a new roof on my house, and I refuse to go through the logistics to find my bus to the nearest DMV office and pay for an ID… Farewell myhealthevet. Sad.
DO NOT use social media such as, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Reddit, Telegram, Tumblr, WhatsApp,
for VA News !
And do not encourage anyone else to! There is so much false information, and Phishing, and garbage there !!
I don’t like the new sign in. My id has expired. No way of getting a new one. So I can’t sign in and do what I used to. So thank you for changing things making me hard to talk to my doctor turn message. And now I have to call in for my medicine.
