To protect your personal information and help prevent scammers from stealing your VA benefits, VA has changed its secure sign-in requirements for all online VA services. Here’s what you need to do to prepare for those changes and how to get help.
What’s changing?
You can no longer use your My HealtheVet ID and password to sign in to VA.gov, VA apps and other online VA services. Plus, after September 30, you won’t be able to use your DS Logon username and password.
Instead, you will have two options for signing in: Login.gov or ID.me. These services are VA’s secure sign-in partners that protect your information and benefits.
To create a Login.gov or ID.me account, visit the Creating an Account for VA.gov webpage and follow the registration instructions for the secure sign-in option of your choosing.
Once your account is created, you will be asked to verify your identity. This is a one-time process that helps keep your information secure. To verify your identity, make sure you have an identification document like your driver’s license or passport, and an internet-connected device with a camera.
Once your account is verified, you can use it to access VA.gov, VA apps and other online VA services.

Monte Krueger’s experience
Krueger, who calls himself a “print person,” asked for in-person help from the staff at his local VA in Grand Island, Nebraska, which was hosting an in-person event for Veterans like him.
Staff members quickly realized that Krueger’s devices didn’t have cameras, which prevented him from verifying his identity online. The VA team lent him a tablet to complete the process and provided printed instructions to help him in the future. Krueger can now easily sign in and access his VA benefits.
“It saves me so much time, and time is all I have,” he shared. “Just make sure that if you’re going to one of these events, you know exactly what paperwork you need.”

which government family member or friend is getting a kick back for screwing up a system that worked fine for years? The old adage “If it ain”t broke don’t mess with it” does not apply to the VA. Nothing the VA has done lately has been an improvement to anyone save the scammer selling them the system changes
You have made the log-in process for individual medical care so difficult for us. I can log-in my Mobile application, but not on-line????
I had a working VA account. It was taken away. Now I have to fix it on my time and effort. That’s not going to happen. I can log into SS, .gov, ,dei, bank, credit card, every other secure site on the planet. When the VA sends me an email/text link and temp password, that’s the only way it’s going to happen. I really don’t care.
I have no fricken idea if I am properly identified or not. I was only trying to verify my email address & password. I had to reset my password. Then, SOMEHOW, I was sent to a web page to replace my VÅ ID card. Why? There is nothing wrong w it. So, I had to choose “lost”. This process is such a pain in the ……. I have no idea if the time I wasted with ID.me resulted in anything being accomplished. Why does everything the VA does have to be so **** complicated?
Here is the issue reported to VA Health with no resolve:login.gov (or id.me) your sign in partner. I have contacted them and they do not know what to do! ….so what do I do to access the VA and VA Health? The login.gov portal will not accept my ID photo/scan or phone number. When the ID photo is perfect and my phone number is the same phone number I have had for 10 years and is on record with YOU THE VA and The SSA and all government agencies. This is very discriminatory. It is age discriminatory, and economic and class discriminatory. The fact that my computer, camera, scanner, or phone is not good enough for their defective internet interface, is almost criminal. I am a disabled American veteran, and all I want is a VA Health Card and access to my government accounts
Login.gov and id.me refuses to verify my identity as it does for thousands of other veterans. They have a 0 rating at trust pilot and thousands of complaints online. Their customer service knows nothing! My phone service is cell phone Tracfone on the Verizon network and the same phone number I have had for over 10 years and accepted by all government sites including the SSA The VA already verified my identity when they approved me for VA Health. The SSA Has verified me so what’s the problem with these fraud private companies being allowed to tell me I am “not verified”? It seems like they are just money laundering companies for someone as reported online by many. They need to be investigated.
Was there significant fraud happening under the My healthy vet system? I very much doubt it. These complications weren’t added to help us, because quite the opposite they have eliminated many older veterans from being able to use the online access. I can’t even leave a comment because it’s requiring a URL of which I have no idea. Going to have to get help even to complain. Total BS that this is for us.
If you want vets to use MHV, then make it easier, not more complicated, to access it. Your IT people decided that it should be accessed through VA.gov, but that only makes it more complicated to reach MHV, not to mention the increased time. Putting everything in one website only complicated matters. I would rather have 2 websites, where I could go to whichever one I want.
As for the two factor authentication, I wish I could opt out. It often takes too much time for the code to be sent. When I email something through MHV, then get a reply, then for me to reply to that, etc., a lot of time is wasted.
I’m retired from the military and VA.gov cannot verify who iam. After a few phone calls ID.me I have no problem
