Are you a Veteran with an injury or disabling condition who has an idea for a device that could improve your mobility, independence or ability to enjoy the activities you love?

Project S.E.R.V.E. (formerly known as Quality of Life Plus or “QL Plus”) is here to help at no cost to you.

For more than 15 years, Project S.E.R.V.E. (Student Engineering for Resilience of Veterans and Emergency Responders) has partnered with injured Veterans and emergency responders to design and build one-of-a-kind adaptive solutions.

Whether it’s something that makes everyday life easier or something that helps you return to a sport or hobby you miss, its mission is simple: if it doesn’t exist, they’ll help build it.

Real solutions built around you

Every project is custom-designed to meet the specific needs of the Veteran. No two builds are the same.

Recent projects include:

  • Custom sport prosthetics.
  • Adaptive fishing and archery equipment.
  • Bicycle loading systems.
  • Specialized work stools and mobility supports.
  • Wheelchair performance enhancements.
  • Service-dog harness improvements.
  • Cold-weather residual limb protection systems for adaptive athletes.

And so much more! Go to ProjectServe.org to see featured projects.

This year, Project S.E.R.V.E.’s flagship National Design Competition has partnered with Team USA Para Sliding athletes, who are also Veterans, to develop innovative solutions that improve safety and performance in winter sport—bringing the same engineering expertise used for elite competition directly to individual Veterans across the country.

If you have an idea—big or small—Project S.E.R.V.E. wants to hear it.

No cost, no red tape

Any Veteran with an injury or disabling condition (service-related or not) is eligible to apply.

There is absolutely no cost to the Veteran. Project S.E.R.V.E. covers all expenses associated with the design and build. If travel is required for fittings or measurements, those costs are covered as well.

There are no complicated insurance forms and no fees. Just your idea, and a team ready to help.

How it works

Project S.E.R.V.E. partners with engineering students at more than 25 universities across the country. These students take on individual Veteran projects as part of their Senior Capstone course, dedicating the academic year to designing and building the solution.

Here’s what Veterans can expect:

  • Fall semester: Collaborate with a student engineering team to design the device.
  • Spring semester: Students build, test and refine the custom solution.
  • Timeline: Most projects begin in the fall and are completed by May and delivered to the Veteran.

Veterans work directly with the student team through virtual check-ins and, when needed, in-person meetings. Faculty advisors and expert mentors guide every project to ensure safety, functionality and durability.

Project S.E.R.V.E. doesn’t design for the Veteran, they design with the Veteran. The result is a personalized device built specifically for you.

If there’s something that would make a difference in your life—whether at home, at work or in the outdoors—Project S.E.R.V.E. wants to help build it.

I had a lady come out to look at my house so that I can get some things to make it easier to get around in my house. She told me that if I came up with or if there was anything that we had talked about to call her and she would get back with me within 7 to 10 working days. I have left 7 voice messages for her and 1 message thru a staff member and still have not heard anything. I need to let her know that I have had time to rethink about our conversation and decided that I agree with her on a couple of changes that she had brought up about some safety items that would help me. How do I get her to call me back? It makes no sense to me to be told that she would return my call and not hear anything at all.

This program called S.E.R.V.E. is fantastic. First I’ve heard of it today. (On a Friday the 13th nonetheless!
I’m a veteran very recently retired from the civilian workforce, I have talent and experience in various fields such as carpentry, construction, police work, vehicle maintenance, heat-treating metals to case-harden, and more. I am feeling a strong pull to use my talent to make a positive difference in someone’s life.
If project SERVE could use help in something I would gladly volunteer my time. This is a spiritual calling and I am ready to answer that call.

Stephanie, I read your reply and I am right there with you. I am also having a harder time getting around because of my back and legs too. I was a plumber in the Air Force. I also wouldn’t know what I could help with either.
      I don’t have a website.
