You know the feeling. You wake up stiff, foggy and not quite ready to face the day. Your back’s tight. Your mind’s still catching up. Coffee helps, but it’s not enough.

Here’s a simple add-on to your morning routine that takes just a few minutes and can change how your whole day feels.

Start the day on your terms

This “Morning Yoga Wake-Up Practice” is designed to shake off stiffness and get you mission-ready in both mind and body.

No gym. No equipment. You don’t even have to leave your bedroom.

The routine uses slow, gentle movements paired with deep breathing to loosen tight muscles after a night of sleep, wake up your joints and get blood flowing, clear your head so you can focus, and set a calm, steady tone for the day ahead.

Think of it as physical therapy for the whole person: body and mind.

Why it’s worth five minutes of your morning

A lot of Veterans carry tension in their body, sometimes without even realizing it. Tight shoulders. A stiff lower back. Restless nights that leave you drained before the day even starts.

Morning yoga can help with all of that. Research shows it can reduce stress and anxiety, improve sleep quality, ease chronic pain and stiffness, and boost your mood and energy.

You don’t have to be flexible. You don’t need experience. You just have to show up, and you’re already good at that.

How to make it stick

The best time to do this? Right after you wake up, before the day pulls you in 10 directions.

Roll out of bed and press play. Go at your own pace; no pressure, no competition. Do it daily for the biggest benefit, but even a few times a week makes a difference.

Small habits, done consistently, add up. You already know that.

Want to Learn More? Yeah, yoga. Hear us out. The “What is Yoga?” series on the VA Whole Health site tells you exactly what it is, what to expect, and why it might be worth your time.

Wake up. Move. Own your morning.

Wish VA put out a FREE chart of yoga, chair exercises, etc that we could print out for referring to. There are lots of paid options, but VA could offer these to us for free!

How is offering Yoga (part of an Eastern religion) to veterans, not conflicting with the separation of church and state? Yoga has deep historical and philosophical roots in Buddhism and Hinduism.
Additionally, the VA also promotes Chi. Confucianism integrates Chi into its understanding of metaphysics. This is the primary origin of the concept in Taoism. “Chi is the vital life force or cosmic energy that flows through all living things and binds the universe together.” This sounds like ‘Star Wars’ rhetoric.

It’s just an exercise. He’s not trying to change your religion. Jeez….
