Remembering Gold Star Mother Ann Sherman Wolcott, my friend and my hero

I met Ann Sherman Wolcott many years ago, shortly after my husband passed away. It was at a Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund event.

Ann was a Gold Star Mother and I was a Gold Star Wife. Our shared commitment to our nation’s Veterans made us instant friends. I loved her as if she were my sister.

After her son Rex was killed in Vietnam, Ann devoted her life to honoring his memory. She served as a National President of the American Gold Star Mothers and worked tirelessly for the organization.

Over the years, she helped countless Veterans navigate the VA system to obtain the benefits they deserved. She was also a great asset to VVMF founder Jan Scruggs in the organization’s early days.

Ann’s dedication extended far beyond national organizations—she gave her time and heart to many causes in her hometown of York, Pennsylvania.

We spent so much time together that we came to know just about everything there was to know about each other. We laughed and cried our way through many years, sharing stories—some spoken, many cherished—quietly between us.

Ann died on August 8. She loved and lived life more than anyone I have ever known. She was my hero, and I will miss her forever.

Ann is now where she longed to be for a very long time—reunited with her beloved son, Rex.
