This Patriot Day marks the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. It is a time to remember those we’ve lost, the courage of those who responded that day and those who served the nation in the years that followed.
In addition to National Cemetery Administration events taking place nationwide Saturday, Sept. 12, organizations across the country are hosting remembrance ceremonies and volunteer events. VA’s National Day of Service and Remembrance will take place at 144 participating cemeteries on Sept. 12, 2026.

I was working as an Immigration Inspector at Houston Intercontinental Airport, IAH, on 9/11. There are as many stories as there are people, but I would like to ad this one in case no one has… we had an Air France flight that came from Paris to Houston daily. When 9/11 happened all flights were grounded. The first Air France flight to arrive in Houston when flights resumed was a flight of French firefighters on their way to New York to help. Of all the emotional events that occurred after 9/11, that particular flight caused me to momentarily lose my composure right in front of the French representative who had come to meet the flight. I never looked at a French traveler the same way ever again. These firefighters looked so young, but so determined to help. And though they would hear it again and again, we made sure to voice our gratitude for their assistance.
