Veterans living in Puerto Rico or surrounding islands have can gain employment opportunities and learn more about their benefits during a virtual Economic Development Initiative (EDI) event on Dec. 10 and 11.
The EDI is a free, two-day event that will connect transitioning service members, military spouses, Veterans, their families and caregivers with health care, education, employment and benefits resources. Economic well-being for the Veteran community requires working side-by-side with partners across the government, private and non-profit sectors to create a local and national ecosystem that improves opportunities and financial sustainability for Veterans.
Event activities are free and include:
- Town Hall and Panelist Event – Dec. 10 9:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Atlantic Standard Time
- Experts will provide an update on key initiatives undertaken to address important issues for the Veteran community in Puerto Rico
- VA leadership will offer connections to programs, services and resources that empower Veterans’ economic success
- Spouse Support Summit – Employment and VA Benefits Workshop – Dec. 11
- Military spouses will be provided with a customized employment workshop to assist them with professional networking and career development
- Spouses will also receive transition assistance with VA benefits and services, and resources for social and emotional health

The December event marks the conclusion of VA’s three-year initiative to support the Veteran community in Puerto Rico that began on Nov. 8, 2018. The EDI events are part of a larger VA Outreach, Transition and Economic Development (OTED) initiative that focuses on select, underserved geographic regions containing large Veteran populations in need of economic support and growth.
Since November 2018, OTED has succeeded in connecting over 1,000 attendees to meaningful employment opportunities.

I am % combined disabled through the VA and I don’t make enough money to move back to CONUS with my autistic son who was born with autism while I was on active duty, my wife and our 11 yo daughter have denied aide&attendant services as my wife can not per-sue her career as a secondary science teacher as I have became bedridden and she is teaching our daughter at home here in the Philippines due to the fact of COVID-19 and that the department of education here is really far behind as far as getting her a good education about The USA and getting a American High School Diploma! What my complaint is that you talk about improving services in another country but all that has happened here in the Philippines is VA has cut off our services and I have spent all my savings on hospitals and doctor fees and ambulance services! We also have pay out of pocket for any orthopedic devices and skin care products due to open sores I have had since after boot camp.
My family and I need assistance in waking someone up in Washington DC so my wife can be paid for her services she gives to me.
I doubt anyone will even read this but I pray someone does and can either help us or guide us to getting the compensation that is needed to keep me alive and just maybe get us back to The CONUS so we can get better services for my service connected disabilities!
