In late 2017, VA began a multi-year effort to revise and update the VASRD, or VA Schedule for Rating Disabilities. The VASRD’s 15 body systems had seen periodic rating criteria updates, but this continuing effort reflects the first comprehensive review since 1945.

Today, VA announced its eighth update: respiratory, auditory, and mental disorders body systems.

The latest update in the VA Schedule for Rating Disabilities (VASRD) at Title 38 Code of Federal Regulations is for genitourinary and cardiovascular regulations. The newest regulations take effect on Nov. 14. 

On Feb. 16, 2022, VA Secretary Denis McDonough held a press conference at VA Central Office in Washington, D.C., which was streamed live to VA employees. The event covered updates to how VA is handling the omicron wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, VBA’s progress on the claims backlog, NCA’s handling of uninterrupted memorial services, VHA’s mission to meet timely appointments and care authorizations, and the secretary’s work with the Congress to invest in VA employees.

Today, VA announced its next update: The musculoskeletal system and muscle injuries. 

The newest revision to the VA schedule for rating disabilities includes updates to infectious diseases, immune disorders and nutritional deficiencies.

Effective December 9, 2018, there is a new rating schedule for the hematologic and lymphatic systems, which addresses conditions related to the blood.

No conditions were removed from the new rating schedule for skin conditions. However, several diagnostic codes assigned to various skin conditions were restructured or revised as VA aims to have the rating schedule better reflect modern medicine

The new rating schedule guarantees both men and women Veterans are evaluated equally.

For the first time since 1945, VA is updating the entire rating schedule to more accurately reflect modern medicine.
