Why would a breathing practice make sense? Easy. We can learn to use breath to calm our nervous system and bring us into the present moment. But it does take practice!
Breathing slowly and deeply in through the nose and out through the mouth with a soft and relaxed belly can increase the body’s exchange of oxygen. This technique also stimulates the body’s rest and relaxation response. It quiets the areas of the brain that register fear and anger.
Your mind and emotions play a key role in your health. Through mindful awareness and self-care tools, you can take charge of your health and well-being to live your life to the fullest. Breathing space is one area of mindful awareness that can help you become fully aware and tuned in to what is going on right now, in the present moment, and without judgement.
Did you know that we take 12-20 breaths per minute on average? It's amazing to think that we have the natural powers to thrive simply by taking deep full breaths throughout our day. This is called paced breathing, which is slowing your breath down mindfully to focus on the length of the breath.
Deep breathing in the moment can reduce and stabilize your heart rate. It can provide a focus point which allows you to feel more grounded and present. When we are grounded in the present moment, we are less likely to dwell on other thoughts.
If sitting meditation is not for you, yet you want the benefits that come from these practices, you may want to try a gentle movement practice such as “Brain Break.”
Mindfulness is about giving yourself permission to slow down, to be fully engaged in the moment without judgement. Becoming aware of your surroundings, thoughts, feelings, and sensations that you might be experiencing allows you to become more thoughtful with how you respond to moments in your daily life.
