“The tragic deaths of Senator Paul Wellstone, his wife Sheila, and his daughter Marcia have tremendously saddened all of us at the Department of Veterans Affairs.
“As a member of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, Senator Wellstone was a tireless crusader for America’s veterans, an issue of paramount importance to him. I greatly respected and admired him for his passion, his character and his commitment for the causes in which he believed.
“My deepest condolences go to his sons David and Mark and his other surviving family members; to his Senate staff, and to all who knew and loved him. Our nation has lost a great statesman, and America’s veterans and I have lost a great friend.”
