WASHINGTON – The Department of Veterans Affairs has awarded grants for nearly $14.9 million to Florida for the construction of two state veterans homes, one in Springfield and one in Port Charlotte.

“This grant reflects the federal-state partnership that is honoring our commitment to care for the men and women who have served in uniform,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Anthony J. Principi.  “These partnerships allow more veterans to receive the respect and care that they have earned.”

The grants will pay up to 65 percent of the building cost for each of the homes.  The overall cost of the homes is $22.9 million.

Each of the new state veterans homes is a 120-bed long-term-care facility offering medical, nursing, rehabilitative, social and other supportive services to eligible Florida veterans, plus parents and spouses of service members who died on active duty.

Information about Florida’s veterans homes can be found on the Internet at http://www.floridavets.org or by calling (727) 518-3202.
