WASHINGTON – A Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) physician who helps veterans overcome the effects of long-term hospitalization was recently named one of five national recipients of AMVETS’ “Silver Helmet” award.
Dr. Margaret M. Baumann, associate chief of staff for geriatrics and extended care at the Hines VA Medical Center near Chicago, was recognized by the veterans service organization for her efforts in developing new treatment and rehabilitation programs that help veterans return to productive lives.
“Dr. Baumann’s work, like that of many in VA, has found application throughout the VA health care system as well as the private sector,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Anthony J. Principi. “Her award reflects positively upon everyone in VA health care.”
The award, a unique silver replica of the World War II GI helmet, has acquired a reputation as one of the most prestigious awards given by veterans organizations and is known as the “Veterans Oscar.” The first “Silver Helmet” was presented to World War II hero and diplomat General of the Army George C. Marshall.
The annual awards recognize outstanding accomplishment in the fields of Americanism, defense, rehabilitation, congressional affairs and civil service. Nearly 300 people and organizations have received AMVETS’ “Silver Helmet” for excellence in various fields.
