National Volunteer Week is April 16-22 and the National Day of Service, on April 21, are right around the corner. Volunteering is both a healthy and rewarding way to give back to the community and support our nation’s Veterans, families, caregivers and survivors. Whatever your interests—career exploration, new skills, work experience, meeting new people or just lending a hand and saying thank you to the people in your community who defended your freedom—VA has a volunteer opportunity for you.
You can volunteer as an individual, in a group or as a family. Your time and talent can be given in areas such as assisting with a food bank, putting together baskets for a baby shower, calling socially isolated Veterans through the Compassionate Contact Corps, greeting Veterans upon their arrival at a VA medical facility or driving them to their appointments.
During VetServe 2023, as our country’s greatest civic assets, we encourage Veterans to volunteer time to serve their fellow brothers and sisters at medical facilities across the country or your nearest National Cemetery as an Honor Guard member. For more information on serving as an Honor Guard member, call the nearest national cemetery at 1-800-535-1117 or visit National Cemetery Administration.
The possibilities are endless and the memories are priceless. To start your journey, visit VA’s Volunteer website to connect with your nearest VA Center for Development and Civic Engagement office or donate online.
For additional volunteer opportunities, visit the Points of Light website or the Americorps website.
