My name is Rishell Chambers, and I became eligible for VA Education benefits through my stepfather, a retired Air Force master sergeant. After obtaining his associate degree while on active duty, he turned his focus on family and career, potentially leaving the remainder of his Post-9/11 G.I. Bill® benefits unused. He ultimately decided that the education benefit would best be used by his children, since he had already gone on to find success in his military career.
Growing up, my parents emphasized the importance of education, and their support for my higher education journey didn’t waiver. My stepfather’s sacrifice influenced my school choice, and even as a high school senior I understood the weight of this opportunity—to go to university without incurring student debt.
As a Maryland resident, Towson University allowed me to receive in-state tuition while still getting the full campus experience. I majored in women’s and gender studies and had the opportunity to work on campus, participate in Student Government and even study abroad in Ghana. Later, I used my stepfather’s remaining benefits to obtain an MA in journalism from Ball State University while working full time at a non-profit in Washington, D.C.
VA education benefits have been invaluable to me and my family. My advanced degree enabled me to change career paths and nearly double my earning potential in just a few short years. I know that it’s a selfless person who sacrifices something of their own to give to another, and I count myself lucky to have such unconditional support from my parents.
While my stepfather found success in his military career, it was his sacrifice that allowed me to carve out my own path for career fulfillment—and for that I am endlessly grateful to him and VA.

Congratulations, to this smart, intelligent, and Beautiful young woman. Who looked around at her parents leading the way by setting examples of hard work and the importance of education. I am so proud that she follow all the rules and it lead to her wonderful success. The VA GI Bill is important to The soldiers, and their love ones. Parents are the ones who love you, shelter you from as much harm as possible, catch you when you fall, and there to see you through all life highs and when you stumble and fall. It’s never just about the blood line it’s about the parents that’s there day in and day out. So thank you to Rishell’s parents as well.
You are truly amazing, keep that fire burning
Congratulations are in order! Rishell’s precious stepfather, a patriotic upstanding American, has always outwardly shown only unconditional love and he continues to protect and assist Rishell with only dignity, truth and humanity. I am not one bit surprised to learn that he went through proper VA channels to assist the beautiful young woman he lovingly calls “daughter.”
Congratulations to this intelligent, accomplished young woman for attaining the educational goals instilled by both her parents. A father is not always connected by blood, but by heart.
How did someone pass on G.I. Bill benefits to a stepdaughter or any one other f their children
Yes, it’s great she got to use her stepfathers VA Benefits to go to school when there is people that actually served that got no benefits to use.
