More than 31,400 Veterans have signed up for VA’s newest life insurance program, VALife.

VALife is VA’s first new insurance program in nearly 50 years, and since Jan. 1, 2023, has provided Veterans with the peace of mind that comes from knowing loved ones will have some funds after their departure.

VALife eliminates time limits to apply, increasing access to more Veterans than ever before. The program offers guaranteed acceptance, whole life insurance to Veterans aged 80 or under with any level of service-connected disability (0-100%). Veterans aged 81 or over may qualify if they meet certain criteria and apply within a certain timeframe.

VA is the nation’s 12th largest life insurer and has issued $950 million in coverage to 31,400 Veterans for VALife in its first year alone.

Key features of VALife include:

  • Coverage up to $40,000, available in $10,000 increments
  • No health questions or medical exam to enroll
  • No deadline to apply if you are age 80 or under
  • Convenient online application and enrollment, and
  • Cash value that builds over the life of the policy, after the first two years of enrollment

VALife premium rates are not based on medical underwriting and will not increase over the life of the policy. Premiums are based on the Veteran’s age upon enrollment and the coverage amount selected. VALife premium rates are competitive with, or better than, similar private sector guaranteed acceptance programs. VALife does not offer waiver of premiums.

The full table of monthly VALife premium rates can be found online, or at https://www.va.gov/life-insurance/options-eligibility/valife/.

In this video, a Veteran discusses why he applied to the program, how he navigated the application process, and how it positively impacted him and his family.

You can apply, receive an instant decision and manage aspects of your VALife policy online, or at www.va.gov/life-insurance.

Check out VALife to help protect those who matter most to you!

I am 75 currently and this April I will be 76. Does that mean if I enrolled today that after 80 if I am still alive that my policy is useless, please.

Is this benefit available to surviving spouse?

  3. BERNARDO VILLACIS February 5, 2024 at 20:57

For ppl like me, when I hit 100 p and t, missed my deadline to get the 10,000 burial insurance due to life emergencies I was going through at the time. I
Looked elsewhere and got denied. I tried life insurance through many other places and I couldn’t get it bc of my several military diagnosis’s. So if you can’t get any insurance from anywhere bc of the same get this, it’s better than nothing. I also was able to get accidental policies with other companies.

I plan on saving as well to cut the costs to my family. Look at the Va burial program and what it covers, it’s not a lot but it’s better than nothing.Yes I agree with we should not have to pay, but at the same time, depending on your rating, you can be buried in a military cemetery for nothing, just funeral director services. and cost of body transfer.some of that you can get reimbursed. You can also get cremated or go for a green burial and all that costs less than 3,000 usually. There is always a way to make things happen. We did get that from life and the military.

SCAM, scam, scam!!!? Well over $400.00 for $25,000.00 max life insurance! I can get a 100,000.00 whole life policy for about the same premium! Vs 25,000 term policy. So much for the VA’s cheap Guaranteed life insurance! ???????❤️? Oh and I am ? % total and permanent disabled for 57+ Years! AND it’s not freeloading when the Government guarantees a CHEAP product to it’s Veterans and WE TRY To accept it and it is thru a private company!

Strange how politicians can receive all types of ‘Free’ compensation while in and out of office, yet Veterans have to pay for such benefits after serving and defending this nation…need I go one? I recall being told we would have these benefits for life when sworn in.

  8. Russell B. Arceneaux February 1, 2024 at 12:40

I was an licensed insurance agent sold whole life, Term , Fire and Casualty insurance products for many years.

    • Roger Hogue February 1, 2024 at 16:42

      And? Then what?

  9. Rick February 1, 2024 at 12:27

Yes we served but we signed up to defend this great nation not to free load off of it.

  10. Juan Varela February 1, 2024 at 12:22

There is balance to be considered.
V.A. home purchase, college money etc.
Yes, it would be ideal, but the oath to protect and defend is one of the primary reasons we signed up. Yes, the risks assumed were existential and many punched that ticket. I’d rather pay for some stuff mindful of the big picture.
Community service on the big stage.

How do I apply for the insurance? Whole Life…?
Cash value that builds over the life of the policy, after the first two years of enrollment?
If I would pass before 2 years the policy pay off to my family the amount insurance selected

  12. Kirk February 1, 2024 at 11:36

I don’t get it…….Why is it our country doesn’t take care of their Veterans. We shouldn’t be paying anything for life insurance or health care. We swore to protect our country.

  13. BKP February 1, 2024 at 11:05

Wow… $182 per month for $40K here vs. $161K for $25.67 per month and optional $10K increases for $1.80 through FEGLI (Federal Employees Group Life Insurance) Program. I don’t want to seem ungrateful to the VA for launching a new and needed life insurance program, but these numbers just don’t seem to add up verses the other government life insurance options.

    • Juan Varela February 1, 2024 at 12:24

      Expensive? Very!

    • Je Daw February 1, 2024 at 17:36

FEGLI is only cheap while you work for the government. If you want to keep it in retirement it triples and if you have the optional multiples, it is more than quadruple. Retirement from the federal government is a real eye opener. The only ones who get the free ride are the congressmen and senators who decide how much money the VA gets to spend on veterans.

What happens to the life insurance plan when I turn 80. I enrolled in the plan prior to age 80.

  20. Tony January 19, 2024 at 07:00

New service-connected veterans don’t realize how the VA did away with the S-DVI and the premium free life insurance for the veterans with 100% P&T and TDIU.

The VA is cutting benefits. I am missing a lot of my lower teeth where they can’t put a denture. The VA also won’t pay for teeth implants. I got to chew my food on the gum in my mouth because I have no teeth.

  21. Harvey Ethern Turner January 18, 2024 at 17:11

Age discrimination by VA by not including veterans over age 80 with a service connected disability. How sad!

  22. Stephen Colwell January 18, 2024 at 10:15

I very much appreciate support VA provides to veterans and their families, including life insurance. I am well acquainted with insurance products, but a whole life or cash value policy is always a bad product. Term insurance is much more affordable for much larger payouts. The so-called ‘cash value ‘ is actually funded by a much larger premium, money that could provide a larger cushion for survivors. I’m surprised the VA is unaware of these details, and suggest offering a superior term insurance.

This Program is an Insult to All Veterans and Is Not Even Affordable !!! The VA and Our Government Should Be Ashame to Offer Such a Lousy Life Insurance Such As This !!!

  31. NorgeX January 17, 2024 at 20:17

This is a commercial, for profit, rip- off, period. Anyone with the fiscal IQ of a rutabaga knows you could invest the required premium amount with a responsible investment firm and take home far more then the value they are offering. I’d bet someone in the VA system is getting a kickback for allowing this scam of DAVs. Disabled vets should be AWARDED free life insurance!! Another liberal fraud designed to humiliate & steal from vets! PERIOD!
    DOUBT ME?
    DO THE MATH!
