This week’s Honoring Veterans Spotlight honors the service of Army Veteran Douglas Macmillan, who served from 1986 to 2015.

Douglas “Mac” Macmillan graduated from Towson University, in Towson, Maryland, in June 1986 with a Bachelor of Science in Sociology. In 1993, he received a Master of Arts in Environmental Planning, also from Towson University. Then, in July 2010, he received a master’s degree in strategic studies from the U.S. Army War College.

After enlisting in 1986, Macmillan was quickly commissioned to second lieutenant in 1987. Over his 29-year Army career, he served in numerous roles within the Army Reserve, including infantry, transportation and as a logistics officer. In 2004, he deployed to Kuwait. He served at Camp Arifjan as the assistant operations officer, 143rd U.S. Transport Command (TRANSCOM). In 2008, he served as the deputy commanding officer for the 55th Sustainment Brigade at Joint Base Balad in Iraq.

Macmillan received many awards and decorations, including a Legion of Merit, a Bronze Star Medal, an Army Meritorious Service Medal (with two Oak Leaf Clusters), an Army Commendation Medal (with three Oak Leaf Clusters), an Army Achievement Medal (with two Oak Leaf Clusters) and National Defense Service Medal with a Service Star.

Macmillan retired as a colonel in 2015 and now spends his time with his wife of 37 years and daughter.

We honor his service.
