Veterans who have at least a 30% combined VA disability rating can now use eBenefits to apply to add a dependent to their compensation award. Part 1 of this two-part video series walks through the step-by-step process for adding a dependent spouse and child under the age of 18 through eBenefits. VA strongly recommends that Veterans file their dependency claim through eBenefits, even if they already have a paper claim pending.

Filing online gives Veterans a faster, and in some cases a same day response, and allows VA payments to begin more quickly. Start your online dependency claim today at http://www.ebenefits.va.gov.

Been trying to add my wife since the summer of 2011. Status was stuck at claim received until June of last year when I followed these instructions. Now my old claim has been closed, and I have a new claim with the status of… claim received. Nice.

What they don’t tell you in this video is that unless you are miraculously chosen for an automatic decision, it will take a year or two for them to add dependents. I don’t understand why it has to be done this way. I have education benefits and healthcare benefits through the VA and they have my dependents on my file. It took all of about 5 minutes for each of those departments to add them. First, why can’t they all use the same database for dependents? Second, why does it have to be done like a disability claim? why can’t you just type them in to your computer instead of making us wait for months on end?

I received information on my claim about my date on the accident, my recollection is either May or Jun of 1991. I try very hard to as exact as possible. [File number redacted] If you’ll like for me to send another DD 214. let me know.
