Newly renovated former Navy housing is giving homeless female Veterans with children a place to call home. The new housing development recently opened in Los Angeles’ San Pedro area and was featured on CBS This Morning. Called Blue Butterfly village, the project is the work of Volunteers of America and provides female Veterans with mental health counseling, job training, money management programs and childcare services.
Secretary Bob McDonald was on hand for the ribbon cutting and told CBS News the goal is to get these Veterans back on their feet, while giving them a place to live.
“We have lots of these that the Department of Defense is decommissioning. And we in the VA want to pick them up right away, we want to make them sites where we can best care for veterans,” McDonald said. “This is the future.”
