Today’s #VeteranOfTheDay is Marine Corps and Army Veteran Richard Kennon.
Richard worked as a nuclear, biological, chemical defense specialist for the 10 years he served with the Marines. He deployed twice to the West Pacific with the 11th Marine Amphibious Unit, onboard the USS Ogden (LPD-5), and once to the Persian Gulf War with the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing.
He was trained and assigned as a Drill Instructor at MCRD Parris Island, SC from 1988-1990. Richard deployed to the Persian Gulf War in 1990-1991, with the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing.
He was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps in March 1992. In May 1995 he enlisted into the U.S. Army Reserve as a Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) Specialist.
In April 2005, Richard entered Active Guard Reserve status with the 392nd and 411th Companies. In 2009 he deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom, with 411th Civil Affairs Company.
Richard retired in October 2014, after 29 years and 9 months of total service. He now works for the U.S. Postal Service.
He spends his free time fishing and playing with his four grandchildren. Richard has held various offices within the VFW, including Post Commander. He is a WWP Alumni, and is active with the DAV and IAVA.
