Today’s #VeteranOfTheDay is Army Veteran Julia Kabance.

Julia was born on the Prairie Band Potawatomi Reservation August 10, 1910. She was one of 12 children. She attended Kewanka grade school and Holton High School, then Haskell Indian Nations University for a year before enlisting in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps on March 17, 1943.

Julia attended basic training at Fort Des Moines Cavalry Post. She stayed in barracks that had been converted from horse stables. She was stationed at McChord Air Force Base in Washington with the Adjutant Corps, where she served until December 14, 1945.

Julia celebrated her 106th birthday last month with a party hosted by American Legion We-Ta-Se Post 410, at the Prairie Band Potawatomi reservation, where she’s been a long-time member. Her family, friends and members of her community attended the party. She also received gifts from the PBPN Tribal Council, VA’s women’s health program and staff from VA’s Eastern Kansas Healthcare System and a local quilting group.

Julia has lived in St. Marys, KS, for nearly forty years. Following her service, she volunteered for many years at the VA Medical Center in Topeka, KS.

We honor Julia’s service.
