Today’s #VeteranOfTheDay is Army Veteran Norman Moeller.
The son of a preacher, Norman and his family moved several times during his childhood. He attended three different high schools, before settling in Pender, Nebraska.
Drafted by the U.S. Army at 22, Norman left home shortly after his marriage to Joanne, his high school sweetheart. While serving overseas, Norman missed the birth of his first child, Keith. The family wouldn’t be reunited until eight months after Keith’s birth.
During his deployment, Norman was first sent to Fort Drake in Japan. There, he was assigned to fire direction. He was then stationed at Haean-myon valley in Gangwon Province, an area otherwise known as the Punchbowl. He returned home after 12 months in Korea.
When asked to reflect upon his service, Norman said in a recent interview, “Well, naturally, you don’t like being away from home and being married was hard,” he said. “But I guess that didn’t bother me a lot, because I knew I was there and I had to be there, so I took it as it was and put in my time and was ready to come home.”
He and Joanne still live on their Thurston County farm and have four children.
Thank you for your service, Norman!
