Today’s #VeteranOfTheDay is Army Veteran John Gualtier. John served during World War II.

As a young man, John spent the last years of WWII in Europe as a combat medic. He treated countless soldiers for war wounds and turned 19-years-old while liberating a concentration camp.

In 1969, John received the Combat Medic Badge and a Bronze Star.

He has put in more than 10,000 volunteer hours at the Iowa City VA Hospital and has been a service officer at his local VFW post for over 30 years. In addition, John spends his time placing Veteran Cemetery Stones in numerous cemeteries across Iowa.

When John returned from World War II, he tried to suppress the painful stories of war. Now he shares his experiences with local high school students and other Veterans.

Thank you for your service, John!
