Today’s #VeteranOfTheDay is World War I Army Veteran, First Lieutenant Longshaw Kraus Porritt.
Longshaw was born in Connecticut and stayed there until he enlisted into the American Ambulance Field Service in March 1917. He enlisted prior to the United States entering World War I.
While serving during World War I, Longshaw was crucial on the battlefield. He was one of the drivers that transported any wounded soldier from the battlefield, ultimately preventing any additional deaths. After being at the Western Front, he transferred to the Navy and then the American Red Cross on the Italian Front.
Within his collection on Veterans History Project, Porritt provides a behind-the-scenes look at World War I through his 272 photographs and manuscripts. His manuscripts depict a more personal perspective on the war.
We honor his service.
