Today’s #VeteranOfTheDay is Navy and Army Veteran Douglas Huggins. Douglas served from1969 to 2009 and fought in both the Vietnam and Iraq Wars. He attained the rank of chief warrant officer.

Douglas joined the Navy on Dec. 27, 1969, shortly after he turned 18. He served for eight years in communications. Douglas wanted to join Officer Candidate School, but the Navy needed his services on the ship. Following his time in the Navy, Douglas joined the Reserves for eight years while he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from East Carolina University. He later joined the Army and was approved for Warrant Officer School.

Douglas served in in Desert Storm. His last tour was from 2005 to 2006 in Iraq. He retired on Dec. 31, 2009 after more than 40 years of service in 31 countries. He was injured in Iraq, suffering a brain injury and many broken bones. Douglas returned to the United States and married his wife, Alice, in the Outer Banks of North Carolina on Oct. 10, 2010.
