Construction has begun on the development of an additional .82 acres at the Fayetteville National Cemetery in Arkansas and is scheduled for completion in late 2020.
“The Fayetteville National Cemetery has proudly served the Arkansas Veteran community since 1867,” said Cemetery Director Skip Solomon. “With this new expansion project, our Veterans and their families will continue to have access to the burial benefits they have earned and deserve for decades to come.”
The land for the expansion was donated by the Regional National Cemetery Improvement Corporation. The expansion project adds 2095 full casket gravesites, 450 in-ground cremations, and 600 columbarium cremations. The expansion contract was awarded to C&C Contracting from Alabama at a cost of $2.3M.
During certain phases of this project, access to sections of the cemetery will be limited in order to maintain visitor safety.
In February 2020, parking and visitation to the columbarium will be affected. Columbarium inurnments and committal services will still be available; however, families are encouraged to discuss the availability of placement witnessing with staff.
In March 2020, the road behind the committal shelter will be occasionally closed. Funeral processions will be rerouted to enter through the maintenance gate on West 11th Street.
Burial info and eligibility
Burial in a VA national cemetery is open to all members of the armed forces and Veterans who have met minimum active duty service requirements, as applicable by law and were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable. Members of the reserve components of the armed forces who die while on active duty under certain circumstances or who die while on training duty are also eligible for burial, as are service members and former service members who were eligible for retired pay at the time of their death. Spouses, minor children and, under certain conditions, dependent unmarried adult children are also eligible for burial even if they predecease the Veteran.
