At the West Texas VA, Veteran John C. Bates was chosen to be one of the #FacesofVA. A WWII Veteran from the 2nd Armored Division, Bates was among the first Allied forces to push into Berlin following fighting in Belgium. Drawing blood can be an anxious task for some patients. Luckily, Georgie (the elf) was there for a little holiday joy! Georgie visited the blood draw at the VA Salt Lake City Health Care System. While there, she also learned a new word: “phlebotomist.” Phlebotomists are people trained to draw blood from a patient for clinical or medical testing, transfusions, donations, or research. Sandra Hernandez, a four year Veteran at West Texas VA Health Care System and head chef, prepares a traditional West Texas BBQ meal for the West Texas VA Community Living Center and Domiciliary Veterans. “I’ve been with VA for nearly five years and I love it – I enjoy what I do helping to heal our Veterans,” said Hernandez. The BBQ dinner was provided by the San Angelo Elks Lodge, Post 1880 as part of their annual tradition to feed and provide holiday gift bags to all the West Texas VA CLC and Dom Veterans.
