Tyler Trahan was born in 1986 and grew up in East Freetown, Massachusetts. While at Old Colony Regional Technical Vocational High School, he was the quarterback of the football team and excelled in academics. After graduating in 2004, Trahan attended Massachusetts Maritime Academy for a year until he enlisted in the Navy in 2006.
After completing boot camp in July 2006, Trahan received an offer to attend the United States Naval Academy to become an officer. He declined and set his sights on becoming an explosive ordnance disposal technician (EOD). In September 2006, Trahan reported to the Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center in Panama City, Florida. Soon after, he attended the Naval School Explosive Ordnance Disposal at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. Trahan also trained at the United States Navy Dive School and Army Airborne School. In 2007, Trahan reported to Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit 12 based in Norfolk, Virginia.
On April 30, 2009, Trahan passed away from wounds sustained during combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Trahan was working with a Navy SEAL platoon in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Trahan’s medals include a Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” (Valor), Purple Heart and the National Defense Service Medal.
