After the passing of a loved one who has served this country, many survivors do not know what to do or where to begin to obtain VA assistance. VA has prepared a Survivors and Burial Benefits kit to help guide Veterans, service members and their families after the loss of a loved one.

The VA Survivors and Burial Benefits Kit gives a description of each burial benefit, instructions on how to apply, and where to go to get assistance.

The Planning Your Legacy: VA Survivors and Burial Benefits Kit covers:

  • Pre-need eligibility for National Cemetery burial or memorialization
  • Memorial or burial flags
  • Government headstones or markers
  • Medallions
  • Presidential Memorial Certificates (PMC)
  • Burial benefits and burial automatic payments
  • Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC)
  • Dependents’ Educational Assistance Program (DEA)
  • Marine Gunnery Sergeant John David Fry Scholarship
  • Survivors pension
  • Special monthly pension benefits
  • The Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (CHAMP-VA)
  • Home loan guaranty
  • Veterans Month of Death benefits
  • VA life insurance

Other features include tips on how to fill out applications with examples of completed forms. These tips examples give applicants a better understanding of how to properly fill out applications.

VA encourages Veterans and service members to discuss their military service with their dependents, as well as planning their legacy. Families and survivors should know where to locate service medical records, discharge documents, VA disability ratings, and other information. These details will be beneficial to survivors as they prepare to apply for VA benefits. Families and survivors should keep this kit in storage so that it will be available when needed.     hope all you guys get a VA response. I just lost one of my close veteran buddies.His wife called the VA and she was told it would take at least 3 weeks or more for the burial to take place she was not told how to take care of the passed away veteran.I hope they will respond in a timely way or I will have to step in since I am a 100% disabled vet. i have gone through the VA not responding to me to get medical care. I finally got their attention when I asked them if I needed to show up in person with a baseball bat to get their attention. i currently live in new mexico but I am familiar with the Dallas VA since I used to live there.I wish the VA would be more caring for our veterans.

      Hello Fred Brandt. I too am a veteran, living in New Mexico. To my knowledge due to me not at 100% disability, I don’t qualify for the burial by the VA. My ex retired and didn’t get anything. His 2 boys had to pay to have him cremated. They were told he qualified for zero. When my dad at 23 year WWII veteran, his VA care was turned over the the State Medicare when he turned 65 years old. SO yes, I do agree with you 100%. I am hoping that my children will not have to bury me with no honors. I do wish the VA was more attentive to us Veterans.

    My kids dad died in August,2020. All benefits were applied for. With the exception of having his ashes interred with a headstone, none of the benefits have materialized. No funeral expenses reimbursement. No pension from her dad. Nothing other than they received the paperwork. This is ridiculous.

    I am a retired Army CW5. I know that my wife and I can share a plot, but what happens if she passed first? Would we just do a cremation and save her urn?

    Find the name or title of the literature or form you need.Call your local State VA 800 number.Let them know you need a Hard Copy sent to you.They have always sent my request. Dont hold breath waiting on it.But it will come.Stay safe and thanks for what you do for your vet or being one.

    I see that medallions are part of the survivors benefits. My question is how do I get a medallion for a cousin of mine that died during W W 2. He was awarded the silver star and he does not have any medallion. Maybe you could direct me on this problem.

      Contact a Veteran Service officer in your county to ask about what to do on obtaining a medallion. I would have his death certificate and his Discharge paper. Maybe his service # which is different than SSN. at that time.
