In honor of Women’s History Month, we want to thank the women who have shaped our military and we need your help putting together a tribute honoring women Veterans. Throughout history, these service members took on a variety of roles and rose through the ranks. They served honorably in a variety of occupations and have witnessed history as the ban on women serving in combat has been lifted. Every woman who served has paved the way for her fellow female service members and we want to say, “Thank you.”
Here is how you can help:
Please send us your photo and a story (between 200-500 words) about your time in the military. If you haven’t served but know a woman who has, you can write about her experience. The selected stories will appear here on VAntage Point throughout the month of March. With each submission, please provide a name, branch of service, when you served, photo, and what you are doing now. Please send all information to newmedia@va.gov by Thursday February 28.

I am a Captain in the USArmy who is working on a PhD in clinical psychology. I am looking for female soldiers and veterans who would like to share their stories about their military experience. If you or someone you know us interested, please email me at lalaw007@gmail.com. I have served in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, so I”ve heard a little bit of everything, the good, the bad, and the ugly. Please share your stories so that we can help others to learn and grow from our experiences.
I am a Veteran of the USAF. I joined in 1978 after graduation from High School. I was at the same duty station for the 4 years of my enlistment. I made Sgt. (a 3 striper with the star). Married my husband in 1978 and have had no regrets of my time in service. I only feel bad when people look at me and say “You never went over seas nor was in a combat zone”. I applaud those who went before me and those who followed. My sister joined the USMC in 1966 and that was to me a big deal. I was 6 years old then and she was just the best sister you could ask for. I am a Mother of a Retired GnySgt USMC and an Active duty SSgt. USAF… Thanks to all who are continuing on in the military!! GOD BLESS
Cynthia Dias–What a great tribute to that generation of nurses. Yes–that’s who we are. I am a Viet Nam Era nurse and flew Air Evac. It is also a tribute to you for having recognized the work ethic and dedication. We are all more fortunate to have you in the nursing profession. Thank you for recognizing and following in those footsteps. Julie Eszlinger Jensen, USAFR, R.N. Col. ( Ret.)
God Bless you and the nurses who help many of GI’s survive to go back “home” to their families. Today, the nurses, both in and outside the VA system are doing wonders for those who have medical issues. May you and all other nurses, God Bless you, and may your reward be waiting for you in the next world. I served in Vietnam, with Air Force from Sep 67 and Sep 68. and remote Thailand, from Apr 69 to May 70. BobWilson, CMSgt, USAF, Ret
As a Vietnam Era veteran and having served with some outstanding nurses as a corpsman, there were a lot of nursing officers who were such wonderful preceptors who had also served on board hospital ships, taking in the wounded and spending endless hours in the operating rooms and postop recovery. My memories of working along side of them I will always treasure. Many of them are probably long gone now, but helped to shape my character, work ethic, and my future that led me to return to college to get a nursing degree. I will never forget them and have tried to be as hard working and instructive to other new nurses coming into this wonderful and rewarding field of work.
