VBA partnered with Stars and Stripes to create a special edition insert for the publication called “The Veterans Benefits Guide.” The print and digital publication, which highlights VA benefits and services available for transitioning service members and their families, is available now.

The digital version of the Veterans Benefits Guide is available here: Veterans Benefits Guide | Stars and Stripes.

What you can expect

The Veterans Benefits Guide answers most of the commonly asked questions for a variety of benefits and services, including:

  • Compensation
  • Life insurance
  • Pension and fiduciary services
  • Education and training programs
  • Economic development and employment
  • Home loan guaranty programs and housing assistance
  • Mental health resources

It also features a welcome message from Principal Deputy Under Secretary for Benefits, Mike Frueh, explaining why he believes all service members, Veterans, caregivers, survivors and their families should learn about what VBA has to offer and why they should take advantage of it.

In addition, the articles include links to helpful resources, such as program eligibility information, yearly benefit program reports, application directions, VBA contact information and much more.

How long does it take the VBA to cover Wartime veterans who served pre-911 to August 2, 1990, for the caregiver benefits they deserve for their caregivers during the pandemic. The Mission Act of 2018 has long since past and the date of eligibility for their service to our veterans deserves to be recognized and compensated along with all veterans who served during this time period. It’s a shameful neglect of duty to make the caregivers of so many great veterans remain unrecognized, uncompensated for their service of the health and daily care they provide to this most neglected group of wartime veterans in the history of the VA. Silenced for their efforts, delayed beyond all measure, and not all of course are not by the way female caregivers for male veterans, a handful of men continue to sacrifice their time and efforts for their female veterans with little to no support, recognition or compensation granted by the VBA to so many others wartime veterans who have sacrificed, suffered and continue to receive care from their caregivers on a 24 hour/7 day a week basis. Shameful neglect of full implementation for all veterans as promised with the delay, upon, delay, upon delay because of a lack of concern for the veterans they devoted their lives to protect and care for many of which have been doing for so for decades. I pray for the safety and health of all my fellow disabled veterans’ caregivers and a long and continued service they provide to all our injured military heroes who are continued to be left abandoned by the VBA during the pandemic and for the many years since the Mission Act of 2018 was enacted into law. Prayers and words mentioned above are nothing compared to action to resolve this problem. As veterans and their families suffer, so too do their great caregivers who seem to have fallen into the cracks of concern among many within the VBA. Delay, Delay, Delay — VBA deserves no high regard KUDOS in expediting the concerns of health and wellbeing of their caregivers. Respectfully, Another Female Concerned Disabled Wartime Veteran in whom depends each and everyday on her longtime patriotic, best friend/husband and male caregiver.

Called the number the VA gave to get a print copy, was on hold for over an hour. When they answered rep said they do not mail the handbooks. She said we can pay $5.00 to the US publishing office, or call your VA facility and request a copy (they have limited copies and when they’re gone they won’t get any more, or go to a VSO.

Trying to get a hard copy. I’m still on hold from this number “For information about the Handbook or to request a replacement, contact us at 1-877-222-8387”. It’s a general VA line but no one answers.

  48. Kenneth Crawford October 16, 2021 at 23:02

So I have printed out this publication from the PDF, and it now appears that the VA also isn’t aware that many veterans don’t read tiny print. I mean, SERIOUSLY TINY, looks like 6 point. I seriously doubt that 10% of the population can read it, and NOBODY wants to. So pathetic. Don’t bother with this guide, that’s my guidance.

  49. Kenneth Crawford October 16, 2021 at 21:41

I was linked here from the VA News, which says it is in “print and digital” versions, and this page confirms that it is “available in both print and digital formats.” Yet the term “available” is used quite abusively, and I mean that literally, because it is decidedly UNAVAILABLE in its print format, to any but those lucky enough to happen across it by chance. Maybe it is to be found at VA medical and other facilities, and perhaps distributed to other organizations who serve veterans as well, but we don’t know any of that, because absolutely NO INFORMATION ABOUT HOW TO ACTUALLY GET ONE IN YOUR HANDS IS AVAILABLE ONLINE, ANYWHERE! This is utterly pathetic. Are you not aware that many veterans are home-bound, or live literally hundreds of miles from a VA facility? That some don’t own printers? Or have the first clue how to order on demand printing, even if it was fair to force them to pay for a “free” guide which is a PUBLIC SERVICE to ALL VETERANS, EVERYWHERE, RICH OR POOR? Get it together VA. Moderator, I realize it is not your job to resolve this issue, but you are in a position to escalate it to someone who’s job it is, who is not doing theirs yet. And as a final insult, you make us do math to submit a comment? Have you never heard that fractions are difficult for some people? That’s on you.

  52. N. "Chief" R. October 15, 2021 at 18:28

So, you publish an article about Vets Benefits Guide now available, including printed version, but do not address how to get it in printed version? This is particularly important for our senior veterans who might not have access to read it online. Heck, look at all the entries here asking for print copy. A bit of common sense, please? That’s all we are asking for.

  53. Thank you and please send me a hardcopy of this Francis Schirck October 15, 2021 at 16:00

To download the PDF, click on the Veterans benefit guide link in the 2nd “paragraph”. After the new page loads, click the little down arrow icon on the top left of the guide. After another web tab opens, click the “floppy disk” icon in the top right of the screen.

If you have a printer, and you want a hard copy, Click on the “Printer” icon next to the “floppy disk” icon in the top left of the guide.
I’m using Microsoft Edge as my web browser.

    • Delbert Mitchell October 15, 2021 at 15:06

Paul, like you, I had health insurance through my employer, the federal government. I never used the VA health system until a few years ago when I was diagnosed with ALS, which the VA classifies as a 100% service connected disability. To answer your question, I have never heard of a deadline for veterans applying for VA health coverage, regardless of when they served. I am a Vietnam veteran, and I only signed up for VA health benefits when I was diagnosed with ALS in 2014. I would encourage you to revisit the VA hospital or clinic closest to you to sign up, and if you have a service connected disability, you may receive disability compensation for it. I would also encourage you to contact the VFW, American Legion, or AMVETS to speak with an advocate to get guidance on how to apply, and in most cases, these veteran groups can do the paperwork for you. Good luck.

    • Delbert Mitchell October 15, 2021 at 15:09

      It should be.

  56. PAUL Snipes October 15, 2021 at 12:59

I am a veteran from the Korea War era. I was discharged in December 1958. I had always had good medical coverage on my civilian job and never needed to use the VA Health Insurance. However, about two years ago I started noticing a loss of hearing. My cousin told me he received a free hearing aid system for the VA. I decided to sign up at that late date for my VA benefits, I never thought for a minute they would one day not be available to me. But that is exactly what happened; I was told that (forget the exact date) on a given day several years earlier a rule was passed the said there was a deadline for Veterans to apply for the health coverage and I was too late, period.

Is that still the case or has that unjust rule been repealed yet? Please help me to find out what I can do to be reinstated in the VA Healthcare program.

Also, there are companies that do print on demand service.

Just send them the PDF and they will print it.

Where can I get a print version?

  156. Robert S. Colson, Jr. October 14, 2021 at 00:05

Okay, so where do I go to get the print version? You show a link to the digital version, but show nothing more about how to get the printed one. Please respond.

  157. Jennifer Roby October 14, 2021 at 00:03

Looked at the digital version and its hard to read on my iPhone and wont size correctly to the screen. Zoom makes it worse to see and you have to move it around to read the article and you have to zoom out to turn the page. I have vision loss issues so readability is important. It should be in a PDF format and Epub. Not just Epub form. Mainly for easier reading. I don’t subscribe to stripes so getting the physical version is not happening for something that should be provided for all veterans without purchasing a magazine or subscription. This also should be mailed to every veterans that are on benefits or transitioning. Thats my 2cents. 100% Disabled AF veteran.

  158. RONALD JARVIS October 13, 2021 at 23:54

The year is almost over and now you come out with the guide for 2021!

  159. Barbara Deans October 13, 2021 at 23:52

If you are going to hire the millennials, please train them extensively. I have had too many mistakes on just about every account I have. They are rude as representatives of companies. I attribute that to only relating to their phones and computers, and on line education. They do not know how to relate to humans. I found all of this out since the pandemic started. It is very frustrating. I do not want to go through this catastrophe with the government offices like I did with so many other offices. I hope you will heed my warning. Please do not ignore this or you will see all kinds of crisis.

  160. Tincie Lynch October 13, 2021 at 23:46

  166. Ricky Phillips October 13, 2021 at 23:12

    Corrections I served from 1976 til 1996.

  167. Ricky Phillips October 13, 2021 at 23:10

Need to explain why the caregivers program is so hard to navigate .and so slow for older veteran. Why but took so long to take care of veteran that served from 1975 and and back. And why it took so long for a program that was already in place for younger veterans. I served from 1976 til 1976. I have to wait until Oct 2022 to apply for the benefit. It shouldn’t take that long for a benefit to take effect or to happen for a veteran. Since it became available over 3 years ago. Next year will be 4 years not for me to receive the benefit but to apply most older veterans like myself over 65 will be dead by then.

  168. William Womack October 13, 2021 at 22:57

How do I receive a hard copy of “The Veterans Benefits Guide.” I do not want a digital version.

At what percentage do I have to have to get my wife covered

    • Gerald Groves October 14, 2021 at 11:49

Henry, sorry, but wives are not eligible for VA Benefits. I am 100% and my wife can’t get benefits. We are both retired from the VA where we live. Both of us have answered that question many times.

      Gerald Groves

      • David October 17, 2021 at 13:26

I am 100% PT disabled ‘Nam vet and my wife just received her CHAMPVA card and information. With that she is coordinating with her Medicare provider to have them bill CHAMPVA directly for her Medicare deductibles and co-pays. At least that is my understanding. Somewhere though we were told or read that she would have to send all of that billing info. herself. We are still working on the correct approach.
A really good phone number for VA guidance is: 800-698-2411. Explain to them what you are trying to achieve and they put you in touch with the right people. They don’t just give you another number to call but transfer you directly.
There is also VA benefits hotline: 800-827-1000 not sure what all they do.
Try to find out what your State and County have to offer. In Orange County, California they reduced my property tax from $1,781.73/yr. to $268.76! ( We have lived in the same home for 43 yrs.). That came about by me calling the assessors office: 714-834-5945. They sent a fairly simple 2 page form to fill out. Then later they asked for a copy of my DD-214.
In California another very good resource is the County Veterans Resource Office. I believe all or most counties in CA have this resource and it is a free service. They are the ones who helped me get my original VA disability claim submitted several yrs. ago and helped me recently get my disability upgraded to 100%. In Orange County:
714-480-6555. When I first went there a decade ago I mentioned in passing that my Dad had been an American POW in Germany. He ended up dying partially from a condition from his 7 months a POW. They asked me to bring my Mother into the Office and they helped her get a monthly benefit of $1,300/mo. or more for the rest of her life. The hardest part of getting the benefits that you deserve is that the VA themselves don’t tell you directly in person.
A local VFW office probably alsobhas free help.

        • David October 17, 2021 at 14:15

CHAMPVA=Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs.
It appears that if you are PT 100% your spouse and children are eligible. CHAMPVA is second payer not primary insurance. It further appears to cover “…all costs Medicare doesn’t for Medicare-covered services.…”. The Beneficiary must have part B Medicare.
Take it one step at a time. Ask your questions as many times as it takes to get an answer you understand.
Try not to let the process wear you down.

Why does my police pension disqualify me from getting VA medical benefits?

    • Pd51 October 14, 2021 at 09:50

It should not prevent you at all. There are plenty of Policeman with Benny’s.

  201. Rick Jackson October 13, 2021 at 19:46

    …already did.

  202. Rick Jackson October 13, 2021 at 19:43

“Change” is great, but NEW benefits that forget or ignore the degeneration of life-skills from prior-era injuries, not recognized by VA (unless the vet’s rating gets up-graded to 100% disabled) is short-sighted. This includes “veteran’s disability-related pain & suffering” and spouse/care-taker support.

Could I please have the printed book mailed to me at:

    See above!

  215. James Hall October 13, 2021 at 18:51

Compensation for me . I had a TBI in 1969 and when I left duty I was awarded 10% a month (which was $.3.00) For 40+ years I fought for more compensation and was refused. I went to a man that told me “you have to prove you have head problems”. well after hearing this for several times I told him that I keep a pistol in my car and I will bring it in. He started stuttering after this and told me to go to the Decatur VA and see the people down stairs. I finally got 70% comp after all those years of true HELL.
