Veterans and their spouses are eligible for free training programs offered by NPower.
NPower’s program has served more than 1,600 Veterans and military spouses with free tech training, professional development, social and mental health support, assistance navigating VA benefits, paid learning opportunities and job placements – all for aiding participants into a successful career in tech.
Finding meaningful employment after leaving the military is one of the most important steps in a service member’s transition to civilian life. Despite possessing a myriad of valuable skills, nearly 50% of Veterans leave the military without job prospects.
Technology jobs are in high demand and competition for tech workers will remain strong in 2022. Veterans are well positioned to meet this demand. Veterans often possess sharp technical skills and have experience with complex equipment. The military prepares individuals to operate in fast-paced environments, and they do so with teamwork and an ability to apply problem solving to any issue.
NPower classes
- Classes are available twice per year: spring and fall
- Spring 2022 classes begin February 21, and applications are due before then

Army Veteran Cameron was on an esteemed track at West Point when a devastating brain aneurysm derailed his plans. Returning to his love of technology, he sought a new opportunity and found NPower. Currently enrolled in the Tech Fundamentals program, he is getting back on track and is resetting his life with a new career opportunity in tech.
“What reset means to me is having a fresh start. You have the chance to rewrite what has happened to you,” Cameron said.
U.S. Air Force Veteran Sarai enlisted after high school for a chance to create a better life for herself. During her time in the service, she experienced assault, isolation and feelings of powerlessness. Upon leaving the military, and during what she considered to be one of the lowest points in her life, she found that NPower offered a pathway for a career opportunity in tech, and also was a source of mental health support and professional development that helped her regain her confidence. With her experience and training in NPower’s advanced program, Sarai now works as an information security engineer and also gives back through her mentorship of NPower students.
“The NPower program helped create structure, purpose and clarity in my life, as well as renewing the passion for service and self improvement,” Sarai said.

What to expect
Eligible applicants can start their application process online. Click here for more information on the application process. There will be a series of interviews to assess applicants’ eligibility and fit for the program. Applicants can speak to an NPower team member and attend a virtual information session to ask any questions. After participating in virtual interviews and being accepted into the NPower program, students can start their virtual classes to launch their IT career.
After 16 – 23 weeks of intensive hands-on technical and soft-skills training, students are placed in a paid internship with top corporations and nonprofits for on-the-job experience. Veterans and spouses can also benefit from NPower’s mentoring, employment readiness workshops and job placement assistance. NPower also offers professional development classes in resume writing, interviewing skills and other job readiness skills.
As an NPower alumni, Veterans can access a growing network in technology, as well as advanced programs, professional workshops, panel events, and can even give back to the community as a guest lecturer, mentor or NPower ambassador.

I would agree with all that said pointed out the lack of locations due to the offering company’s locations. I, like everybody else, I was looking forward to something like this.
I would suggest that it be offered as a full virtual experience. Some education is better than nothing at all.

I understand the frustration getting an email that sounds promising only to find out there are limits on it but instead of coming up with conspiracy theories do some research first. If you go to the organization that is running this program you’ll see they are only in certain locations. https://www.npower.org/locations/ They are a non-profit that partnered with the VA to get their information out it’s not a VA created program.

Over the years NPower has expanded our geo-reach across the U.S, like Mark said we are a non-profit organization.

Although I love to read and pass on knowledge, others like to skim the headlines to obtain their information. What people should understand is just because it does not apply today, things change and they should keep checking for updates. Just a suggestion, thanks.
Mark. Thanks for this response and clarification. I am a retired Marine and I lead NPower California. Half my NPower CA team are veterans. We wish we could be more places and serve more people. We have plans to grow. The program is solid and there is a reason we focus on veterans, spouses (and even dependents aged 18-26) within a 2-3 hour radius of these cities. The endstate is getting our graduates jobs. That requires personal relationships with employers. We know the job market and the companies. We set up the job interviews and talk our grads up before sending them to meet the recruiter. Warm introductions are a competitive advantage. Therefore, our students/graduates should be in commuting range of those jobs. We have helped get veterans jobs at Deloitte, Accenture, Astreya, even Google and the SF Giants. Grateful to the VA for sharing this. We are 100% free of charge and part of my job is raising funds so that we can serve more veterans and expand to more cities and states.

Hey all, kind of bummed myself that this isnt offered in more places, especially because I’m in Chicago area. BUT, I can tell you that I just completed a great program for UX Design at General Assembly, and I believe it’s covered by any GI Bill more recent than the post 9/11. They have a multitude of “Bootcamp” certification programs. I had some benefits remaining after getting my bachelors and used it for this. It’s veteran owned. They have limited locations as well, but maybe it supplements for some of the lacking locations for this.

All great programs and everything. Why am I being sent this email When I don’t live in your targeted area. either offer the program to everyone without a barrier or send it to the the targeted area of people only. this got my hopes but I am no where near any of these places.

I got involved with Vetforce (free training for Salesforce) about 1.5 years ago, then got involved with their fellowship program through Hiring Our Heroes, which got me a job in a consulting firm. Others that I have worked with along the way recommended Mervis, a professional mentorship program for vets. I have never used their program, but they have a great reputation!

sounds like a great program, however very disappointed that it is only targeted to a select geo area. This is the problem with so many programs, they promise great things and then create barriers. Shame on the VA for even promoting this and sending this to me and the thousands of others vets. This is nothing more than false advertising and really should have been considered junk mail

Like pretty much every comment said, we’d like this opportunity to better ourselves and further our careers, but the randomness of the cities in which this training is located in is extremely odd. MD, NJ & CA… Three states, really? This sounds more like a pilot than an actual program that is up and running. At minimal, his should be available in at least 1 major city in EACH state – two to three cities in larger states such as PA, SC & TX.
This definitely was not well planned out or executed prior to bringing this to our attention… As they say in the Marine Corps, Proper Planning Prevents P*ss Poor Procedure… Y’all got our hopes up then gave us the green weenie. SMH Then y’all give us math problems so we can post a comment. SMH
People…this is a recruitment for def / intel / contract work. The gov is bleeding conservatives and the liberals aren’t joining up. Plus those cities guarantee a high percentage of progressive-marxistist oriented candidates.

Hello and thanks so much for commenting. The program currently only accepts folks living in or near the cities listed due to the nature of our job placement format post-training. While the training can be offered virtually from any state, we cannot assist with job placement in cities where we have no relationships with prospective employers. We are working hard to expand our services and hope to serve you in the near future.

Why is this offer for all states?
Is there anything for Kansas city,Kansas veteran for schooling or tech career.
Can’t see the benefit for those in areas just as torn with veterans struggling in places like Newport News, VA and Charleston, SC amongst others.
Does this program require any GI education benefits?
I have seen other programs like this but, those require some amount of remaining GI bill benefits.

Vet tech you can attend intellectual points program online . They’re bases out of Virginia but you can attend virtually. :)

sounds like biden put this tech program together. its available to only 6 cities and their outskirts, nobody else, but send this out to everybody, show them what they got have.

The training is virtual but the reason we can only work with folks living near the listed cities is because we assist with job placement after the training, and most of the partnerships we have with employers are local to our brick and mortar offices. Happy to answer any more questions you have.
So, not all deserving veterans get the same opportunity as do urban veterans? Most veterans I know would rather live in in the country? Veterans should get the same opportunities no matter what. It’s up to them to relocate if they want to advance, but at least give us the same shot.
