VA Narrows Options for Site of New Louisville Hospital
LOUISVILLE – Louisville-area Veterans are another step closer to receiving expanded access to high-quality, state-of-the-art medical care.
Secretary of Veterans Affairs (VA), Eric K. Shinseki has selected two preferred sites for a replacement hospital. Previously VA was exploring five site options that consisted of three undeveloped sites, reconfiguration of the existing VA medical center, or locating downtown adjacent to the University of Louisville Hospital.
A site on Brownsboro Road was selected as the preferred site for the replacement Louisville VA Medical Center. An undeveloped site at St. Joseph/Factory Lane was selected as the second preferred site.
The Brownsboro Road site is located adjacent to the Brownsboro Road and I-264 (Watterson Expressway) interchange and is within close proximity to the current Robley Rex VA Medical Center and the downtown University of Louisville Hospital. The site is close to dining and shopping amenities and utilities are readily available.
The St. Joseph/Factory Lane site is located along I-265 (Gene Snyder Freeway), south of Factory Lane and is approximately 13.5 miles from the downtown University of Louisville Hospital. This location is close to dining and shopping amenities, as well as nearby medical facilities. Utilities are readily available at this location.
VA has undertaken a series of due diligence requirements, on five site options, in the areas of real estate (title, survey, geotechnical survey and appraisal); environmental (compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act); and historic preservation (section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act). These studies, along with the solicitation of input from Veterans, will continue for the preferred sites while VA works toward the acquisition of one of these properties.
