Today’s #VeteranOfTheDay is Women’s Army Corps Veteran Alice Evamae Ewing Phillips. Alice served during World War II from 1944-1947.
Alice enlisted in the Army when she was 21 years old. In an interview with the Veteran’s History Project she fondly remembers her time in the military and how it shaped her. She joined the Army because she wanted an education in the medical field, particularly as a lab technician. Prior to enlisting in the Army, Alice had worked in a hospital gaining experience, and being a member of WAC allowed her to further develop her skill set. After basic training in Des Moines, Iowa, she was sent to Amarillo, Texas where she worked in a hospital as an aide. Later, she was ordered to an Air Force base in Columbus. There she continued working in a hospital, but in a lab. Looking back at her time in WAC, Alice had many happy memories and believed that the discipline that is taught is helpful especially in the healthcare profession.
Alice passed away on April 5, 2015. She is survived by generations of nieces and nephews, as well as countless friends and relatives.
We honor your service, Alice.
