WASHINGTON – Veterans in Nebraska will have greater access to long-term health care, thanks to a $13.8 million grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to build a state nursing home and domiciliary in Bellevue, which will replace the existing facility in Omaha.
“This grant honors our commitment to care for the men and women of Nebraska who have served in uniform,” said the Honorable R. James Nicholson, Secretary of Veterans Affairs. “Our federal-state partnership helps to provide comfortable housing for some Nebraska veterans.”
The $13.8 million grant will pay up to 65 percent of the cost to construct and equip a 120-bed state veterans home and domiciliary at the Eastern Nebraska Veterans Home in Bellevue. Overall cost of the project is estimated at $21 million.
In fiscal year 2004, VA spent more than $508 million in Nebraska to serve over 159,000 state veterans. VA operates major medical centers in Omaha and Grand Island, with outpatient clinics and Vet Centers in many communities.
In addition to the Omaha facility, Nebraska already operates veterans homes in Grand Island, Norfolk and Scottsbluff. Further information about Nebraska’s veterans homes is available by calling (303) 385-6100.
