#VeteranOfTheDay Navy Veteran Wilfred Carl Anderson

Today’s #VeteranOfTheDay is Navy Veteran Wilfred “Andy” Carl Anderson.

Andy served in the Navy from 1944 to 1946. He was stationed on the USS Morris in the South Pacific where he eventually achieved the rank of Radioman Second Class. While on the USS Morris, Andy endured many raids by Japanese planes. On April 5, 1945, the ship was hit with a Japanese suicide plane and torpedo, taking the lives of a significant portion of the crew. Andy survived the attack and brought the ship to a repair base and later to a naval base in San Francisco.

After his service, Andy attended the University of Minnesota and worked as an administrator for Dakota County in Minnesota, as well as working as a labor mediator. He went on to participate in a large amount of volunteer work, and was a founding member of Veterans For Peace in Duluth, Minnesota. Andy passed away on Aug. 28, 2015 at the age of 89.
