WASHINGTON – Lisette McSoud Mondello of Texas was sworn in today as Assistant Secretary of Public and Intergovernmental Affairs for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

“Lisette brings to VA a wealth of experience in the private sector, Congress and the executive branch,” said the Honorable R. James Nicholson, Secretary of Veterans Affairs. “With her talents and leadership, VA will improve its communications to veterans about the invaluable programs and services offered to those who serve our nation in uniform.”

In her new job, Mondello will be responsible for advising Nicholson on matters relating to media relations and public affairs.  She also directs the Department’s internal communications and oversees intergovernmental relations, which includes homeless veterans, consumer affairs and four national rehabilitative special events.

A graduate of Trinity University in San Antonio, Mondello has headed the press offices for Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas, Sen. Alfonse D’Amato of New York and Rep. Jim Collins of Texas.

She has been senior vice president for the Dallas-based Spaeth Communications, Inc. and executive director of the Texas Foundation for Conservative Studies and Associated Texans Against Crime.

Before coming to VA, she was senior advisor to the Secretary of Education and helped develop the long-term communications plan for the “No Child Left Behind” Act.
