WASHINGTON – R. Allen Pittman was sworn in as assistant secretary for human resources and administration in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) on November 30.

“Allen Pittman brings a record of success, extensive experience in the management of large, complex organizations, and an abiding commitment to America’s veterans,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Anthony J. Principi.

In his new position, Pittman will serve as the department’s chief human capital officer and will oversee and direct both policy and operational functions in five major program areas: human resources management, diversity management, equal employment opportunity complaints resolution, labor management relations and VA Central Office administration.  Additionally, Pittman will serve as VA’s designated agency safety and health official.

Prior to his nomination, he was a co-founding executive of US Oncology, Inc., a Fortune 500 health care services company where he served as chief administrative officer and executive vice president of human resources from 1993 to 2001.  From 2002 until his nomination, he served as executive vice president of executive services and as executive director.

Pittman has more than 30 years of human resources experience in the business services, health care, and energy sectors, 19 of which have been in senior management positions.

Pittman’s executive experience focused on change management.  He has managed corporate turn-arounds, restructured and re-engineered corporate and operational procedures, and directed corporate staff functions in rapid growth environments.

A 1974 graduate of the University of Arkansas, Pittman received a bachelor of science degree in business administration with a major in general business and personnel management.  He is a Vietnam veteran and earned a Navy Commendation Medal with Combat “V.”
