WASHINGTON – Making sure the Oklahoma Veterans Home remains a comfortable residence for veterans, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) today announced a grant of more than $612,000 to renovate the Ardmore facility.
“This grant honors our commitment to care for the men and women who have served in uniform,” said the Honorable R. James Nicholson, Secretary of Veterans Affairs. “Our federal-state partnership will provide a comfortable home for some Oklahoma veterans in a time of personal need.”
The grant will pay up to 65 percent of the cost for renovations at the Ardmore facility. The overall cost of the project is $941,725.
VA’s State Home Program is a partnership with the states to acquire, construct or renovate nursing homes, domiciliaries and adult day health care facilities for veterans. The states own and operate the homes, but VA can provide up to 65 percent of the cost of approved projects. When construction is complete and inspections are satisfactory, the facilities qualify for per diem payments from VA.
In fiscal year 2004, VA spent over $1.2 billion in Oklahoma to serve more than 355,000 veterans who live in the state. VA operates major medical centers in Muskogee and Oklahoma City. VA health care was provided to 78,578 people in Oklahoma during 2004.
