WASHINGTON – Making sure that New Hampshire has safe, comfortable residences for its veterans, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) today awarded a grant of $1.6 million to New Hampshire for updates to fire and safety equipment at the state veterans home in Tilton.
“This grant honors our commitment to care for the men and women who have served in uniform,” said the Honorable R. James Nicholson, Secretary of Veterans Affairs. “Our federal-state partnership will provide a comfortable home for New Hampshire‘s veterans in a time of personal need.”
The $1.6 million grant will pay up to 65 percent of the cost to renovate the fire and safety equipment in Tilton. Overall cost of the project is estimated at more than $2.5 million.
Last year, VA spent more than $325 million in New Hampshire to serve about 131,000 veterans who live in the state. VA operates a major medical center in Manchester, with several outpatient clinics located throughout the state. VA health care was provided to 25,484 people in New Hampshire during 2004.
