WASHINGTON – Secretary of Veterans Affairs Anthony J. Principi is encouraging veterans and their families to visit a new government web site — www.earthday.gov/ — that provides a comprehensive guide to Earth Day events sponsored by the federal government and other related environmental issues.

“The Department of Veterans Affairs is committed to the health of the environment and promotes pollution prevention, energy efficiency and acquisition of environmentally preferable products,” Principi said.  “VA employees can help protect our natural resources by getting involved in their own communities.”

EarthDay.Gov is the first interagency effort to create a comprehensive federal resource for people who would like to participate in Earth Day events this April 22nd.  This site will also allow people the opportunity to research other year-round environmental activities in their community.

President Bush has asked all federal agencies to support volunteer service this Earth Day.  “In the three decades since the first Earth Day celebration, our air is cleaner, our water is purer, and our natural resources are better protected,” President Bush said.  “We have learned from our successes and are putting that experience to work at the Federal, state and local government level.”

Visitors can search http://www.EarthDay.gov/ by state and region to find community service opportunities and Earth Day events where they live.  This web site will allow visitors to download classroom curricula and find additional information about the environment.
