WASHINGTON – To help provide expanded living arrangements and opportunities for Nashville’s homeless veterans, the Secretary of Veterans Affairs today announced a $127,750 grant to Operation Stand Down Nashville Inc.
“Homeless veterans aren’t looking for a hand-out, but a helping hand,” said the Honorable R. James Nicholson, Secretary of Veterans Affairs. “This grant will provide assistance during a time of need for Nashville veterans who have served this nation in uniform.”
Nicholson was represented at the presentation of a ceremonial check by Richard Wannamacher, Deputy Under Secretary for Memorial Affairs for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
The grant will enable Operation Stand Down Nashville Inc. to create 12 beds for homeless veterans in a transitional facility and to acquire a van to help homeless veterans get to medical appointments, job interviews and other functions.
VA is the only federal agency that provides substantial hands-on assistance directly to homeless people. Last year, VA health care professionals treated more than 100,000 homeless veterans. More than 40,000 homeless veterans receive disability compensation or wartime pensions from VA.
