“With the passing of Sen. Robert C. Byrd, the nation has lost a skilled lawmaker, who lived with a copy of the Constitution in his pocket and an abiding concern in his heart for the well-being of the nation’s men and women in uniform and its Veterans.  His steady influence in the Senate Appropriations Committee has been a key element in VA’s modernization and expansion of its facilities in recent years.

“He will long be remembered for his attention to the needs of his home state, which has resulted in VA’s reception of generous funding to establish state-of-the-art facilities throughout West Virginia, most recently a high-tech, national IT training center in Falling Waters, W.Va., and a cutting-edge emergency operations center in Martinsburg, W.Va., that will allow VA to operate during a wide variety of natural and man-made disasters.

“Robert Byrd’s 52 years of service in the Senate is a peerless example of public service, commitment to the rule of law and a clear demonstration of man’s capacity to grow to meet the challenges of his time.”
