Assistant Secretary for IT Praised for Dedication, Professionalism

WASHINGTON – Secretary of Veterans Affairs R. James Nicholson today announced that Robert N. McFarland, Assistant Secretary for Information and Technology (IT), has submitted his resignation, effective April 30, 2006, and will return to retirement in Austin, Texas.

McFarland, a Texas native and retired Dell Computer Corporation executive, has served in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) since January 2004.  He helped formulate the reorganization of the VA’s nationwide IT operations, which is underway.

“I thank Bob McFarland for his dedicated and professional service to VA and his fellow veterans,” Nicholson said. “Under his leadership and initiative, VA has strengthened its position as the world leader in the development and use of an electronic medical records system, and has made great progress in modernizing the Department’s vast Information and Technology system.”

“I am deeply honored to have had the opportunity to serve the President and the Secretary, and most notably to have served my country and my fellow veterans,” said McFarland, an Army Vietnam veteran.
