WASHINGTON – To ensure Georgia provides state-of-the-art residences for veterans, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is providing two grants totaling more than $1.3 million to the state for renovations at the 20-acre state veterans home in Milledgeville.

“These grants honor our commitment to care for the men and women of Georgia who have served in uniform,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Jim Nicholson. “Successful partnerships between federal and state governments are paramount to provide caring and comfortable environments for our veterans.”

VA’s grants cover 65 percent of the estimated $2 million cost for the new renovations.

Georgia‘s veterans homes are available to war veterans who have been discharged under other than dishonorable conditions.  Veterans must have resided in Georgia for at least five years immediately preceding the date of application.

In fiscal year 2006, VA spent over $2.1 billion in Georgia to serve the state’s 757,000 veterans.  VA operates major medical centers in Augusta, Decatur and Dublin, as well as outpatient clinics and Vet Centers across the state.
