VA Secretary Nicholson Announces Funds with Gov. Pawlenty at State Capitol
WASHINGTON – Ensuring that the state veterans homes in Minnesota remain adequate residences for veterans, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is providing $12.5 million in grant money for improvements to the Hastings and Silver Bay state veterans homes.

“These grants honor our commitment to care for the men and women of Minnesota who have served our country,” said Nicholson. “By working together, the federal and state governments are providing comfortable housing in caring communities to veterans.”
Minnesota also operates veterans homes in Fergus Falls, Luverne and Minneapolis. The homes are available to veterans who served on active duty for 181 days or more. Veterans must be Minnesota residents, have honorable discharges and demonstrate a medical need. Some spouses of eligible veterans may also be eligible.
In fiscal year 2005, VA spent more than $1.1 billion in Minnesota to serve more than 426,000 veterans who live in the state. VA operates major medical centers in Minneapolis and St. Cloud, with outpatient clinics and Vet Centers across the state. VA provided more than 755,000 outpatient visits to veterans in its Minnesota facilities during 2005, and admitted about 10,400 veterans for inpatient care.
