WASHINGTON – Ensuring that New York provides state-of-the-art residences for veterans, the Secretary of Veterans Affairs today announced a $43 million grant to replace the State Veterans Home in Oxford.

“This grant is evidence of our commitment to the men and women of New York who have served our country,” said the Honorable R. James Nicholson, Secretary of Veterans Affairs. “Successful partnerships between federal and state governments are paramount to provide caring and comfortable environments for our veterans.”

The grant will pay up to 65 percent of the cost to replace the 242-bed nursing home at Oxford.  The overall cost of the project is approximately $66 million.

In fiscal year 2005, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) spent nearly $3.4 billion in New York to serve more than 1.1 million veterans.  In New York, VA operates 11 major hospitals, 11 nursing homes, 12 Vet Centers and more than 50 outpatient clinics.
