WASHINGTON – The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has awarded a grant of $839,000 to the Commonwealth of Kentucky for improvements to the State Veterans Home in Wilmore.

“This grant honors our commitment to care for the men and women of Kentucky who have served in uniform,” said the Honorable R. James Nicholson, Secretary of Veterans Affairs.  “Our federal-state partnership helps provide comfortable housing for some Kentucky veterans.”

The $839,000 grant will pay up to 65 percent of the cost of renovations to the Wilmore facility.  Overall cost of the project is estimated at $1.3 million.

In addition to the Wilmore facility, Kentucky operates veterans homes in Hazard and Hanson.  The facilities are open to Kentucky residents with military discharges rated as other than dishonorable. In fiscal year 2004, VA spent more than $920 million in Kentucky to serve more than 360,000 veterans who live in the state.  VA operates major medical centers in Ft. Thomas, Lexington and Louisville, with outpatient clinics and Vet Centers in many locations.
