WASHINGTON – The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has awarded a grant of $1.2 million to Wisconsin to renovate an air conditioning plant at the state veterans’ home in Union Grove.

“This grant helps us to partner with states in honoring America’s veterans, especially as they get older,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Anthony J. Principi.  “Our goal is to provide a comfortable environment for veterans in a time of need.”

The grant to the Wisconsin Veterans Home at Union Grove will pay up to 65 percent of the cost of construction and equipment for the project.  The overall cost of the project is $1.8 million.

The veterans home opened in 2001 as an assisted living facility for Wisconsin veterans and their spouses.  A 42-bed assisted living center was opened in September 2004 and a 120-bed skilled nursing facility will be added in 2005.
